When you finally get a jab in at your lame boss

Because I strongly suspect the comment section is going to get heated: please remember, Adam cannot read your threats, but I have to. Don't say anything overly graphic. Also, while discussions are great fun, please be courteous. I do prune comment threads when they become pointless inflammatory arguments, but I'd prefer if I didn't have to.

Adam reaches up and grabs Talita's antler, yanking on it hard enough to swing her head around. He smiles smugly.

Adam: So you can't feel this?

Talita recoils from him with a hand in front of her face, staring in shock. Yao gapes and then looks away fearfully from the two of them.

Talita: What the fuck⁇

He throws his hands up defensively, still smiling.

Adam: Hey, calm down!I thought you said it doesn’t hurt!

Talita's face bristles in rage.

Talita: What!? That doesn't mean you can YANK on me!

  1. Yeah your hair also doesn’t have nerve endings, it’s all dead cells until the roots. But I’m sure if Talita tugged THAT, Adam might not be too happy.

…I, however, am not going to speak for the other people in this comment section.

  2. And here comes HR Violations McGee!

  3. Thinking about all the seasonal temp jobs I’ve worked and all the Adams I’ve worked with and if anyone GRABBED THE BOSS by their FACE they’d have been bounced out quicker than they could say “it was just a joke”, I hope he’s out of there TOMORROW.

(inb4 “she grabbed him” grabbing some fool man who was breaking safety protocols to keep him from hurting himself is excusable even if it’s not professional, this is neither excusable nor professional)

It sucks that Talita’s in this management role that she doesn’t appear to have been really trained for, the “how do i establish professional roles while not seeming like a dick” is such a difficult soft skill when you transition from coworker to manager, and managing these kinds of employees is not easy

  4. Ugggggghhhhhhh it sucks that this kind of behavior has been a pattern for Talita for her whole life, at least judging by that one side comic where she gets poked in the nostrils with a stick at teenage sleepaway camp. And it REALLY sucks that Talita can’t flip this guy off or even make a clear point about boundaries by grabbing his nose back or something, because she’s an adult now and HIS SUPERVISOR and also much, much larger than him. Jay, I think you are building a pretty strong case for why someone in this situation might say “fuck it” and just leave.

  5. Mango The Captain

Oh man, I didn’t even notice Yao’s expression till I re-read this page.

    1. Yeah, he yanked her horns too before. She knows it’s uncomfortable but is bullied down from standing up for Talita.

      1. xe/xer iirc

  6. The fact that so many people in this comment section is exoticising Talita (talking about hypercarnivorism and the danger of her body like she isn’t a sophont, like she would maul someone) is driving me up the wall. He knows she won’t bite his hands or anything because he subconsciously understands that she is a person, not a wild beast, and she probably gives off enough human body language and social cues to make him feel comfortable enough to treat her with the same sort of disdain he would direct at any human “acceptable target”. He probably also realizes that he can get away with a lot more bullying because she can’t retaliate without being the “scary alien hypercarnivore”, and she knows that too. He’s not trying to be alpha, he’s a cowardly bully-boy and, like most bullies, is picking on the easiest target.

    1. “Adam shouldn’t do this because she could eat him!” actually he shouldn’t do this because Talita’s a person who has a right to exist comfortably in a public space like everybody else. saying Adam shouldn’t bother her because of her species is not a pro-Talita or pro-Centaur stance.

      1. Exactly! She’s a person and he shouldn’t be doing this because it’s a shitty thing to do to anyone!

    2. God yes!!!!!!!!! Thank you!!!

    3. I, personally, can draw a parallel to something I have unfortunately witnessed first-hand. Quote: “You’re a big muscular scary dude, why are you so scared of a tiny guy with a knife?”

Obviously not a one-to-one analogue to what’s going on here, and I have no illusions otherwise – but the parallels are clear to me all the same.

  7. …and then he’s going to claim her not wanting to be grabbed is “rules for thee and not for me” and be an even bigger dillweed and hr will either explicitly take his side or do nothing. my eyes are rolling into my skull already.

  8. It sucks how even people in the comments are making a point of mentioning Talita’s otherness and danger to Adam when trying to defend her. No offense to anyone, but it’s so interesting how many people, even in the real world, default to thinking of her as ā€œscary hypercarnivoreā€ first and person second. It’s just like… augh, I really feel for her here. Even if I haven’t experienced this kind of bigotry, it feels so real in such a painful way.

    1. If anything I previously had the expectation that *Adam* would be fixated enough on her perceived alienness/otherness to hesitate with something like this — but that’s my shortsightedness! Of course a guy like this can totally hold a double standard of denying Talita’s personhood/referencing her potential for violence while also realizing that she’d never *really* do anything if he harassed her. Which means he has the potential to leverage both for his benefit: he can be a bully … but who would believe that puny Adam could pose a threat to big strong Talita?

    2. tale as old as time with humans. you see it presented a lot in post modern works written by black americans (notably, Invisible Man), but people will see stereotypes and labels first and foremost. like calling a disabled person useless vs being so careful it’s patronizing are two sides of the same coin.

      1. God, Invisible Man is such a masterpiece. Had a high school lit teacher assign it and it definitely rewired my brain for the better lol

  9. Adam in this picture looks like a dumbass high school student. That stupid twig neck of his makes him look young. And yet he is old enough to have been hired and fired at least once. For being an idiot. It is remarkable how well you can see in his very face and design that he is a dipstick manchild who needs to grow the hell up and quit being an absolute tool.

  10. shivers down my spine

  11. The most heartbreaking thing about this page is how no one within earshot is standing up for Talita. Maybe the next pages will prove me wrong, but I highly doubt it given how it’s the temps we’re talking about. Great execution as always, Jay.

  12. Having just watched boots on netflix (series about a gay guy going through boot camp for the marines) before reading this page, my very first immediate thought was how much I’d love to see talita going full over the top american drill sergeant on his ass the second he even touched those tusks.

Adam would so get his ass fucking folded in the marines.

    1. edenmachine5457

.btw they’re antlers and not tusks! tusks are continuously growing teeth, antlers are yearly intentional bone cancers basically. despite their placement they are antlers because they grow usually once a year, shed their velvet, and then fall off

    2. If a centaur deployed the Mk.1 knife hand on me I would die on the spot, not gonna lie.

      1. “the temp cannot climb the ladder if you disable his hand”.

    3. now im thinking of the combat capablity of a centaur in the human forces… i bet there’s a demand for GMH soldiers in RTTS

  13. Adam really needs to have a little information on the dietary requirements of centaurs dropped into his inbox, with a comparison with… I don’t know. Velociraptors?*

Hmm. Now who might be able to pull off such a stunt?

    * Talita would never… but Adam doesn’t have to know that, any more than he needs to know the perils of alien protein intake.

    1. Though, with someone as thick as Adam, there’s some merit to “show, don’t tell” …

I wonder whether Talita would be OK with the team’s shift schedule (suddenly) including common lunch breaks?

      1. I really doubt she’d be okay with eating in front of strangers. She’s already self conscious about her body, and I’m sure that includes eating ā€œweirdā€ food and having two ā€œmouthsā€. Also I believe Jay stated that to humans, centaur foods can smell rather rank, which is part of why she asked if they minded her eating during the party chapter.

        1. The thing about the smell is that all alien foods smell chemical-y, because yeah they’re all just weird poisonous chemicals.

    2. He knows she’s a carnivore (see page 91).
That actually might be part of the reason he is constantly trying to assert dominance over her..?

      1. I think so, too. He seems to be the kind of man who tries to pick a fight with the bouncer for no apparent reason and ruins everyone’s fun night out because now they have to pick him up from the police station and give a f$cking witness statement. And he’s like “I’m the most alpha ever. Were you impressed by my alpha behaviour? I was.”

    3. Fuck this comment actually. She’s a goddamn person.

  14. talita it is me i am the angel on your shoulder i am speaking directly in your ear. you have to punch your shitty coworker immediately there will be no negative consequences punch him NOW

  15. Lmao. This is also partly Talita’s fault for failing to express authority over problem workers – we used to have a teacher like her in school and every lesson with us was hell for him. He simply wasn’t a person of respect, thought yelling and giving us extra homework was sufficient but no one cared; we simply didn’t do the extra work.
On the contrary, there was another teacher who, despite of him being only 1,67m, carried himself with authority and confidence – he never felt the need to yell but gave silent punishments when needed. I feel like Talita never had any training in correctly expressing her status as a higher up and, therefore, she only hopes that people around her will just be nice enough to not cause trouble – which leaves her overwhelmed when they don’t.

    My take.

    1. That’s just victim blaming

      1. Don’t deflect. Talita is a higher up to the temps and should carry herself as such – what do you think Adam not only touching her antler but yanking her in front of at least one other person is going to do for her confidence and authority? If you work a job, you’ll know that a healthy distance between a boss and their coworkers is needed to maintain a stable relationship; joking with them or making them feel safe is also building trust so they know they can come to you with problems. But what I’ve seen from Talitas behavior throughout the scenes with her temps is childish behavior where she acts almost no different than a regular colleague.
And the result is exactly what you see happening on this page. Adam’s an asshole but that’s exactly why his behavior should have been corrected by someone capable of executing authority and respect.

        1. I’m curious, how exactly would you suggest she disciplined him? do you think she has the authority to discipline him in any significant way? what would you call the multiple times she’s corrected him or tried to, like the previous instance of snatching him off the unsafe ladder and asserting her authority? It does sound like victim blaming. and also, you may be vastly over qualifying Talita as someone who can ‘discipline’ her temps when she doesnt actually have that authority. not to mention talita did not sign up for this position; she was thrust into it against her desire. So it’s hard for me to think thats a viable option. also i dont think talita’s demeanor is unprofessional – none of the other temps are bullying her, meanwhile Adam has bullied more than half his team. And Talita has corrected him before on it. How is Talita the problem when the problem is so obviously Adam being an asshole? Him assaulting her came out of the blue from his vindictiveness. And of course Talita has the self control not to retaliate but I refuse to see her self control as weakness in this situation. She’s gotten in trouble countless times over her life for reacting to human aggression and has learned not to knee-jerk respond.

        2. Channel your inner Ohwitiil, Talita.

        3. Talita has expressed that she is relatively new to a management position and doesn’t feel confident handling the temps. I suspect she is aware that this is an issue, but my sympathy is still with her! I don’t see a conflict between recognizing that Talita is not in her element and also expecting basic decency from a coworker without having to drag it out of them.

        4. What punishment task could she give to Adam that does not also mean she isn’t responsible for making sure he doesn’t do anything stupid?

I don’t have the full picture but from what I’ve read so far it seems to me that Talita wants to be liked/respected by her temps, they’re not just a nuisance or a job she can fully compartmentalize emotionally, but tries to take it in stride – ruling through fear of punishment will grind her down as she’d have to bend herself into someone she isn’t. She may just be caught in a trap formed by the environment and by who she is.

        5. Expecting one’s employees to refrain from shit a middle schooler knows is wrong is not asking too much, actually. The adult world of work is not set up to deal well with idiots assaulting their fellow workers precisely because it is expected that you’ve learned to not do that by the time you reach the age of majority.
Talita can’t give him detention. He needs fired. Even in countries with much better worker protections than the US, a stunt like this can rightfully leave you unemployed within the hour.

        6. Talita has been suddenly thrust into a management position with no training or experience whatsoever, and no consideration for her mental or emotional state. She’s basically been set up to make every mistake in the book, by someone who doesn’t care.

  16. Yikes. And there I thought he was gonna go for the PMS joke…

  17. He yanked hard enough on the horns of a carnivore to wrench her entire head around. Honestly dude’s lucky that she didn’t have any reflexive action to that happening. Talita could have easily bitten his hand into pulp before realising. Whatever power play he thinks he’s making is not the power imbalance he should be concerning himself with.

    1. Hi it’s Jaguar

Tbh, I think any of those fight-or-flight (I guess mostly fight) responses to being grabbed etc. wouldn’t be present after a lifetime of being very careful and making herself as small as she can. When you’re four times the size of everyone you know it’s pretty imperative you learn not to injure anyone on accident.

    2. Hi it’s Jaguar

Also, it would be kind of impossible to bite in that specific situation, lol. It’s like if I tried to bite someone who’s grabbing my jaw, lol. Physically out of bite range.

    3. She’s a damn person… What a nasty comment.

  18. This entire page triggered a level of very specific visceral discomfort I never thought possible from a webcomic before
I absolutely hate it, 10/10, stellar writing and buildup, I want to launch Adam into orbit

  19. Wow. What a fucking manchild.

  20. I am have to comment is ā€œhe screwedā€

  21. What an ass!
Human hair doesn’t have nerves, but it still hurts when you pull on it. How would Talita’s antlers be any different?

    1. Hi it’s Jaguar

Fr! And whether it hurts or not, grabbing someone and pulling them around is not something you should be doing.

    2. I saw this immediately after commenting the same thing, lol

  22. Got nothing to say about Adam that hasn’t been said, but I do love the detail that Talita is so stressed by this that she forgets to point her trunk-mouth away from people she’s talking to, and the speech bubble reflects that too.

    1. Not only that, but her trunk is in the angry S shape.

  23. I feel some people are dunking on Adam for the wrong reasons here. ā€œOh, what a moron to do that to somebody with the ability to fold his spine like an accordion.ā€ Doesn’t matter. Talita can be harassed and assaulted like anyone else, no matter how physically capable of harm she is, and she should be respected and treated with the same courtesy and gentleness you would give anyone else. Even if Talita could melt Adam with her laser eye beams in this moment, it wouldn’t make her feel any less dehumanized over what he did, and all the consequences that’s gonna come from it.

    1. The comments of this nature are driving me a little bit insane lmao. Her body does not make her an inherently more dangerous and threatening person than a human. This line of thought is part of why the temps treat her with the distance they do. There IS a dangerous and threatening person on this page, and it isn’t Talita…

      1. its kind of fascinating to watch some commenters replicate the exact prejudices (that centaurs in general and Talita specifically face) this comic has over and over again shown to be depersoning and degrading as a point of, like, pride? As if they agree with the idea that her body is inherently frightening and a tool of violence but- in a good way? I’m not seriously calling anyone bigoted here but it’s strange to see real people echo fictional (though reflective of reality!) prejudice

      2. what adam /really/ needs to be scared about is having a boss that /won’t/ save him from a fatal plummet by climbing unstable death traps…..

      3. If it makes you feel any better, I’m sure these people aren’t intentionally trying to deflect your themes. Thoughts like ā€œAnd then Talita picks up Adam with one arm and hucks him so hard he leaves an Adam-shaped impression in the wallā€ are, at least in my experience, a reflex that people have to try to regain some power over the situation. Just like replaying a conversation in the shower and filling in all your previously cringeworthy responses with something that would have been far better. In other words, it’s cope, only designed to feel better in the moment.

Try not to go too insane, you’re tackling a very difficult subject for most people to grasp the nuance of, and getting people to understand that can sometimes feel like talking to a brick wall. You’re doing great so far, so don’t worry šŸ™‚

        1. Just one more thought, just on the comic in general. There’s also the reality of prejudice being alive and well even in the most well-intentioned people. If I worked under an alien boss, especially one as physically imposing as Talita (anyone over a foot above my height already heightens my nerves; I know she’s a sweet gentle soul but she is HUGE and I am so very small), I can’t say with certainty I’d be able to react much better. I can say confidently I’d call Adam out, but I wouldn’t know how to comfort Talita. Maybe I’d even unintentionally offend her or make the situation worse by trying! All under the assumption that I don’t know her entire life story of being raised under humans and with human norms of course.

      4. Yeeeah it really feels like some people are not taking a moment to think before writing their comments. It’s unfortunate because this whole time the point that Talita just wants to be treated like a normal person has been hammered in pretty hard, only for commenters to still talk about her like she’s some wild animal…. I hope that folks will learn to be a little more thoughtful and respectful

    2. LITERALYYYY as if
      a) humans aren’t ALSO apex predators
      and
      b) he shouldn’t grab Talita for the sole reason you shouldn’t grab ANYONE like that because it’s fucking rude, no matter how buff they are

    3. Yes!! When Talita complains about the temps on page 53, she’s frustrated that “they’re worried that if I get mad I’ll flip out and maul them or something.” The temps’ skittishness and Yao only starting a conversation to ask about Talita’ biology (as opposed to asking about her interests, how her weekend was, etc.) are not as bad as Adam’s physical assault, but all of these exist as examples of the ways the temps–consciously or unconsciously–don’t see her as a person worthy of respect equal to themselves. It’s pretty clear that Talita doesn’t want to be seen as a ferocious monster, a unique curiosity, OR an animal to yank around. She wants (and deserves) to be seen as a person.

  24. Oh my god this guy sucks so much 😭😭

  25. Talita’s reaction is very understandable, especially since this was entirely unprompted in the context of this conversation, but I would bet that Adam will pull a “you mean like you grabbed/yanked me off the ladder” in the next page in response to what she just said. And he does have a point with that.
Her behavior on the last two pages would have been justified and understandable to other characters in the comic if she had complained/mentioned Adam’s previous behavior to someone higher up before. Now it will just seem like a random overreach (hah) that is completely irresponsible and inappropriate.
He makes me so angry, I hate him. Well written characters you’ve got there.

  26. Hi It’s Jaguar

I think at this point there is more than enough grounds to have him fired or at least punished for reckless/disrespectful behavior in the workplace. I know you don’t like interfering with things Talita but it’s time to talk to Mel (before Adam ends up ruining something way worse)!

  27. I’m starting to think this guy WANTS to get fired.

    1. not technically out of the question believe it or not. his character page states he explicitly doesn’t want to be here! there is a possibility for this to be a branch off the “acting out so you get kicked off the baseball team” thing that kids and teens sometimes do when signed up for something they don’t want to do.

  28. Ohhh nooo Yao was (in my very humble takeaway pls be gentle) just trying to relate about antlers as a conversation starter cuz xe literally just noticed Talita’s velvet was gone and now it opened the gate for Adam to tromp all over it šŸ˜–
Ruining moments that might otherwise be kinda ok is his real job I swear

(I’ve seen comments say that it wasn’t the best thing for Yao to bring up off the bat, but I wish Talita could talk to xem and they’d sort out some kind of budding acquaintanceship since to Yao xe might not’ve known how to start so just chose the simple-seeming topic of her antlers so maybe were looking for something they both shared to talk about… That and, as previously mentioned, Adam just HAAAD to Do Something. As usual. lol)

(Also plsplspls be gentle w me I’ve never commented before but I felt for Yao and Talita real bad TTuTT)

  29. Since everybody just want Talita to curb-stomp her tormentor into a messy puddle of pulp on the floor , right here and now , then let me be the voice out of sync . Maybe Adam is hopelessly in love with Talita and does all those awkward and futile things to gain her attention but just make him seem like a jerk…If not, then he is just a jerk. Same result.

    1. if adam is in love with her (doubtful) perhaps he should stop being 5 years old about it

      1. I know right that kinda flirting is something only middle schoolers do

        1. Well….Adam does seem like a 5 year old child stuck in the body of an adult….Interesting, its almost as there is a hidden angle here..So maybe we will still see a page with a tear-drenched Adam clinging to a terrified TalitaĀ“s hindleg while bawling “Dont leave me MY LOOOOOOVE!!!”

More the reason to board the RunAway ! like ASAP.

Nah, probably not. He“s just an insensitive Bully. We have all met them IRL. And now they are in space.

    2. “Makes him seem like a jerk” I promise you don’t need that “seem like”

    3. Staring in Every Woman That’s Been Groped Ever.

    4. Ehhhhhh I wouldn’t go with the ā€˜he’s bullying you because he has a crush on you’ thing in any positive light ever personally

    5. MyUniverseinaBox

Even if that were somehow true he’s still a jerk. lmao. The ‘he’s only mean to you because he likes you’ thing is, to put it lightly, disgusting. It’s disgusting misogynistic garbage and does not change a single thing here. Might make Adam even /more/ of a Jerk, if that were the case, actually.

This translates to “Men are emotionally immature and it’s the womens job to deal with that.”

    6. I’m going to Word of God you here and say that the concept of romance or sex with Talita would not naturally occur to Adam, and if suggested, would make him as disgusted as asking him if he’d like to make out with a dog.

      1. for some reason it did not occur to me before seeing this comment that Adam might be disdainful towards aliens in general and not just Talita

  30. Talita would never retaliate, but i am not above biting. Adam When I Get You

  31. Oh thank ZOD he’s not capable of internalizing like I suspected and he just immediately acted out. Though, honestly… all the evidence was there the whole time, when has Adam ever not immediately acted out impulsively without forethought, so thankfully this is the one time it’s been a “kinda not the worst thing”.

This could have been so much worse, at least he was just an impulsive prickish jackass who needs to relearn boundary respect (something civilized people learn in kindergarten) instead of a //vindictive// prick who’d have schemed up revenge and done real damage later on…

(Though the jury is still out, so we’re keeping our eyes on you Adam. You best not screw up, you’re already on “yeet at will” status.)

    1. Also… Talita is sooooo much more level headed and “calm” than I’d be. My flashpoint anger response would have been to immediately throw hands and with the physicality differences… Adam would be dead know if I were the Centaur he’d grabbed like that.

Because I’d have back handed him abruptly and I doubt that would be survivable.

  32. Honestly if I saw Adam do this I’d snark “Maybe I should yank your hair too? Not like it has a lot of nerve endings beyond the roots either!”

Also Yao’s reaction really gives the idea Adam pulled that stunt before…

    1. i mean, he did straight up swipe one of xyr antlers when xe took them off to put xyr helmet on earlier

  33. BY ORDER OF THE JARL, STOP RIGHT THERE!

  34. Damn I knew he was going to do something extra asshole-ish but this is a whole new level 😬 My anxiety for Talita is so visceral!! I do feel like he’s going to spin this as “So you can grab me but I can’t grab you?” like it wasn’t a completely different and much more dangerous situation..
Anyways ADAM WHEN I GET YOU šŸ‘ŠšŸ‘ŠšŸ‘Š

  35. Like a lot of others here, I do have a lot of thoughts along the lines of “Adam, I am DISPLEASED by your actions” (understated here). But now I’m honestly curious about something – once this sequence is over, I’ll see if I can float this by a former manager I know, and ask how they would’ve handled this situation.

    1. That would be very interesting. Report back if you can!

  36. guards!!! guards!!!

  37. DO NOT FIGHT HIM! Walk away and report him. No one ever notices he start of a fight so if you react you’re the one in th wrong. Especially since you’re someone who stands out from the crowd. Humans hate people who are noticably diffeent to themselves. Trust me. I’ve been through all this myself for beign born with Autism, for being taller than other people. For beign LGBT. If something about you makes you not fit in, that something is criminal and they’ll watch everything you do for something they can weaponise to prove their bias against you. So just walk away from him.

    1. These are very wise words. Walking away is a valuable skill, very much worth the hardship of teaching it to yourself!

  38. ohhhh im so pissed on talita’s behalf

  39. I think the worst part is how strategic Adam is being about this. People have pointed out that this is taking place in a locker-room like setting so it’s possible there is no/minimal monitoring, for one. But he also has a witness who was also being inappropriate with Talita at the same time. While Yao simply asked an uncomfortable question and didnt physically assault her, if Talita now goes to the high-ups about Adam’s behavior, he can point to Yao and say “Well why aren’t XEY getting written up too, huh? Yao was also being weird, that’s not fair!”

His little smirk tells me that he is VERY sure that he will be getting a slap on the wrist at most. And while I want to give Mel the benefit of the doubt, it may be out of their direct control, and no matter how well-meaning they might be Mel IS still management first, and therefor beholden to corporate fuckery if they are first line to deal with this.

The next pages sure are going to be stressful.

    1. > But he also has a witness who was also being
      > inappropriate with Talita at the same time.

Million witnesses question: Where are Dominic and Phoebe right now? They were out there with them and have lockers in the same row …

      1. In the previous page you can actually see Phoebe behind Yao in the background, looking like she’s putting on or taking off shoes. She’s very faint and undetailed, but it’s clearly her from the ears. No clue on Dom though

  40. The Opossum Witch

Worked with an Adam before, guy who thought he could do anything because he was a guy and all of his higher ups were “women or gay”. He eventually got fired for taking pictures of HIPAA info to use in his stand-up comedy routine. Jay you have captured the essence of every workplace bastard who just can’t comprehend how they’re in the lowly peon position while “undesirables” are in the position they want.

  41. Oh god. This made my skin viscerally crawl. The way Adam feels he can just touch Talita’s body, paired with his smug look and the fact that I *know* she’s experiencing serious species dysphoria from it…

  42. This is the first page i am commenting on, for any comic. Usually i lurk and just simply read the pages and enjoy the comic on my own, but this page has gotten such a visceral reaction out of me. The way Adam has grabbed Talia’s antlers like that surely cannot be comfortable, i yelled at my screen when i saw this page. I dont usually do such a thing, but this Adam has managed to shock me so much. The expressions and they way he looks after grabbing her is so much, and Talita’s shocked face…I hope he gets some retribution soon, even if it just a scolding. This and the centaur temps implied to be arriving later will be the tipping point for Talita, i bet…

Thank you Jay for making this comic so expressive it even makes an introvert like me angry at Adam…

  43. Well, I feel like this is definitely going to undermine any attempts by him to try to make a formal complaint about Talita grabbing him earlier.

  44. send him to the principals office and have him EXPELLED

  45. So, we fully know Talita is over a gentle soul and the like.

But lets be honest, Adam is a bit in LOVE with trying to upset a creature who is likely over four times his mass, has teeth made for eating bones, is able to run at the pace of a car, and on top of all of that is a body builder in her spare time.

This man has zero survival instinct and it shows. He would right up to a gator and put his arm right in it’s mouth.

    1. He absolutely WOULD, wouldn’t he? This dude has the survival instincts of a lemmings, what the actualy fuck is he thinking? He has to know this isn’t going to end well for him on some level, good grief.

    2. Adam would 100% go base jumping without a parachute because it’s “moar extreeme!1”

    3. He’s doing this to her because he knows she won’t do anything to him about it. She has to be excessively careful around other sophonts because of her size and strength, and unfortunately because she’s not human she also has to deal with being, potentially, “the example”. If she hurts him, even on accident, he will spin it as being about her species (even though, and especially because, she was human-socialized). She knows this. He knows this. So she is, in essence, a “safe” target for him, where a homeworld centaur might not be.

    4. I think he feels a need to show he’s not afraid of anything. That his “real man card” might get revoked if he shows fear.

    5. Tell this to Bip, Bip will have psych profiles. With an AI in your corner you will probably be able to make someone back off, just from saying the right things.

    6. i feel like adam would be the kind of guy to brake check a semi. and also get mad when it rammed the back of his car because it literally just cant stop that fast

    7. Stop othering Talita. She is a PERSON. These kinds of comments are nasty as hell.

  46. you’ve heard of Florida Man, now get ready for Dirtball Man

    1. Starting to think Dirtball was named just for him

  47. Talita you NEED to go to space. Watch her not bring this up to Mel because it’s been shown in the past that they can’t handle that.

  48. mister electric. kill him

  49. Well. I wasn’t expecting THAT to be the Stupid Adam Trick I read was coming. That’s the thing about people like Adam in real life, they DO think about what they’re doing, but their thought processes and sense of right and wrong are so warped that it’s hard to predict how they’re going to come at you, at least at first. And then the MOMENT it’s too late to stop it, the whole line of their reasoning seems obvious, and you feel like kicking yourself for not having seen it coming.
But you shouldn’t, because only someone like Adam would think that way.

  50. Rad Internet Stranger

Ohhohoohhh that was a dumb move on Adam’s part, Talita you have every right to intimidate him into deserved submission >:0

  51. OFF WITH HIS HEAD

  52. he will be boiled

  53. jay if you kill Adam you will be reincarnated as a beautiful lotus flower

  54. oh WOW i was not expecting him to do something like that the bastard. holy shit man. i hope Talita is able to figure out how to handle this because wow heads would be rolling if that was a situation i was in. props to this page for singlehandedly making me feel more anxiety and rage at a fictional white guy than i have ever ever experienced before.

    1. also the fact that he looks SO perfectly happy and smug in the 3rd and 4th panel is so so so well done and so absolutely infuriating. get his ass talita

      1. I told myself I was gonna read all the comments before commenting, but this. That smug. So much this. The Adams of the world jsut can’t comprehend there are things they don’t have a right to do.

      2. So what I think Adam is attempting to do here is set Talita up. If she goes to Mel and says Adam grabbed her, Adam can say well she grabbed me first, maybe even before Talita can explain the situation of *why* she did that. It’s not like Adam would have gotten down if she’d just told him to, if anything he would have climbed faster, the way a dog chews faster if you ask what its got.

        1. Now I’m imagining Talita wrestling alien food out of his mouth like a dog with a chocolate lmao

  55. talita my queen i will save you

    1. Light_In_The_Fog

I’m certain with the combined resources of this comments section we can get enough lawyers and/or bribe enough people to let talita get off with murder

  56. I also wonder how, if Adam did this to a homeworlder centaur, how different centaur cultures would react. I can’t imagine any of them being okay with it, because that looks rough on the neck at least, but I wonder what different severities of ā€˜not okay with Adam doing that’ they would have.

    1. I feel it would go very poorly for Adam.

    2. Like, I don’t think they’d react with intentionally lethal force, because at the end of the day everyone involved is a sophont who knows that’s not the kind of thing you can do without consequences even to someone who just assaulted you, but someone without Talita’s background of trying to keep her head down while constantly being othered for her species would probably not take it lying down. Even if that came in the form of a lawsuit or something rather than any kind of physical response.

Come to think of it, if he did this shit with a homeworlder centaur instead of Talita and caused an international incident, Adam might WISH the centaur in question had just punched his lights out.

      1. > if he did this […] and caused an international incident,
        > Adam might WISH the centaur in question had just […]

Hmmm, I’m not sure that the centaurs themselves would have enough pull to cause problems to Adam, given that they cannot possibly be happy about the exploitation as cheap workforce happening elsewhere, either. However, chances are that it’d prompt the BF(GC) to consider the matter, and that’s the kind of nonperishable administrative flatbread¹ he would likely regret.

        ¹ (I.e., everlasting bureaucratic PITA.)

        1. eh bug ferrets aren’t great about not-explicitly violent things like exploitation. as far as they’re concerned it’s not a problem until over 50% of the group is suffering. at least according to the lore page

  57. the amount of rage this page makes me feel is indescribable . adam im gonna GET !! YOU !!!!!! im going feral

  58. I don’t think any other webcomic has managed to make me feel the sheer amount of anxiety that this one has during scenes like this. Like idk something about how these tense interactions are written is really good and stressful. This is a good thing! I’m on the edge of my seat each page!! AaaaH!!!!!!!

  59. Taking bets now šŸ’µ! The next thing outta Adams mouth is gonna be something about how Talita grabbed him so its totally fair for him to do the same!

On the bright side Jay you at least know you made an extremely successful hateable jerk XD

    1. I think so too. And he legitimately doesn’t understand the difference, because in his mind he’s never done anything wrong ever in his entire life. Regardless of where this goes next, it’s going to be on Talita to deescalate – which is realistic but so so infuriating.

      1. Rad Internet Stranger

Spot on my friend!! People like Adam don’t know when to quit because they’ve never been told they have to, they think they’re above everyone else. Adam is a fantastically well written example of these kinds of people, well done Jay!!!

  60. HOLY SHIT WHITE BABY YOU CANNOT DO THAT.

  61. Oh no… I can see where this is going…

  62. i hope commenters can. be chill, for you jay. excellent work on all the expressions! the swirling! godddd. i’m so anxious/excited to see where this goes. we all know she’ll leave dirtball and be on the runaway crew eventually but theres so much suspense to see HOW that happens! delightful

  63. what fascinates me about adam is his sheer contempt for talita. her authority, her body, her species. he makes it clear as day he does not see her as a person worth his respect on an even person-to-person level. we can see he has overall disrespect for biomodders and GMH (which jay has explained that, on homeworld/earth, biomodders and GMH tend to exclusively be wealthy and privileged individuals, far and away from the spacer culture where being a GMH is just something that you are, and biomodding can be like getting piercings or tattoos), which he views as punching upwards. to some degree, THAT i can almost give some wiggle room for. he’s a homeworlder who clearly doesn’t know shit about spacers or the modern form of GMH and biomodding, and thinks he’s the underdog who has to swing his weight around. this is NOT to excuse his actions btw; he’s an asshole who has notably been rude to pheobe and assaulted yao by grabbing xer horns without consent (grabbing someone’s prosthetics, decorative or not, while they are being worn or handled, is assault)

but his violent contempt for talita… is he just treating her like he does GMH? does he have a problem with aliens? with centaurs? does talita just act in a way that triggers his ableism/misogyny (she behaves in a way that reads as neurodivergent to humans, after all)? is it simply because she’s an authority figure and he isn’t? what’s his fucking problem? i’ve called him a cracker before, and truly he exemplifies the worst of white jackasses who think they’re the smartest guy in the room, but sheesh.

    1. MyUniverseinaBox

I’d honestly chalk it up to a mixture of all those things. Probably especially because Talita has authority over him, and he clearly doesn’t like that. I think we can all agree managers and bosses suck just because of the power imbalance, but I don’t think Adam is coming at it from that point of view lol. Adam seems the type that just likes being in charge for ego reasons.

      1. I think that Adam is misogynistic towards Talita even though he doesn’t see her as a woman, he just feels like the kind of guy to be like that. Now that i think about it many trans women would unfortunately find that relatable

        1. agreed. i bring up the racial element at play here a lot, because im racialized myself, but i do fully believe misogyny is also at play here. he’s not OPENLY contemptuous of the women on his team, but that might just be because human-to-human harassment protections are much stronger. we also dont know how he interacts with the other temps off screen because talita never goes to interact with him off the clock, and she’s our POV character. it’s also easier to be a bully if you pick one specific person to rag on, as the more people you harass, the more likely they are to unionize.

someone else brought it up elsewhere, but they mentioned how adam started acting up as soon as clayton was out of commission, and poorly behaved men tend to be better behaved when there’s another man around. i don’t doubt that clayton’s absence has emboldened adam to act more antagonistic (the team is now three women and one nonbinary person), especially since it’s (BARELY, but still) implied in one of the AMA’s that clayton doesn’t care for adam and probably course corrects him from time to time.

side note: i do like how jay (mostly, barring certain vital establishing shots or set-up panels) doesn’t show us things talita can’t see or wasn’t there for. we only have as much information as she does, for the most part.

        2. MyUniverseinaBox

Oh yeah 100% this guy is misogynistic lol

    2. I don’t have anything to add, I just want to say this is an incredible breakdown of his character! I loved reading this

    3. It’s never risen to this level, but I’ve had male employees deliberately ignore my instructions because I’m a woman. And it was always on *me* to remain calm, since I was the one in charge – and they faced no consequences, even when going against my clear instructions caused harm, because I didn’t have disciplinary power & my boss decided the entire situation was my fault. So yeah, Adam’s behavior & the Adam/Talita/Mel situation is distressingly realistic.

    4. It’s interesting, if you go way back, maybe to the first locker room scene in Chapter 1, or maybe on the characters page? But somewhere, Jay described Adam in terms that make him sound like a pretty normal homeworlder typ Human, which… is starting to hit different.

      1. Chase Wanderstar

He might be *physically* normal, as in “no, not all Earthers are genetically-modified whale people”, and not mentally *abnormal* as in “doesn’t have a diagnosable mental illness”, without being *the norm* either.

I cannot believe that *all* the non-complete-and-utter-jackwipe people blasted off to space, leaving Earth populated with safety hazards with a bad attitude. For one, Idrisah’s family seems pretty sane and not douchey.

      2. Well, prejudiced and ignorant attitudes up to outright homicidal hatred of the other are pretty normal even now. Scratch most any person, and they’ll reveal they hate those durn furrinners / those lazy fake disabled people / those uppity (racial group here) / those dirty (lower caste or class here) / those arrogant (higher social status group here) and of course those scheming Jews. Adam is perfectly normal in the sense of ordinary, and if you told ne such people don’t exist in Nexus Jovia, I’d suspect some form of drugs in the air or water supply. Or brainwashing. They may be more rare on account of having more modified people around and more contact with other sophonts, but at the end of the day they’re still a member of a highly social species of ape to whom in- and outgroup status is extremely important and needs to be both monitored and enforced at all times.

        1. Yeah, you’re right. RttS is such a charming little slice-of-life story that I keep forgetting it’s set in a horrific dystopian post-apocalyptic society.

        2. Sparky Lurkdragon

(Reply to a reply since there’s no reply button for it)
I wouldn’t say it’s dystopian, just not utopian. The humans are part of the general speculative evolution nature of the project; cultural evolution instead of biological in this case. It feels like a musing on where things would go given this and that factors affecting where their cultures went.

It isn’t perfect by a long shot, but it isn’t really a hellhole, either, inasmuch as real life is/isn’t.

    5. Plasmatic Shrimp

you know, i don’t think i’ve ever thought of it like that before! as much as i want to hurl insults at adam, this comment made me realize why he might even be doing what he’s doing

      1. it’s important to look at the purpose a character serves in the story and their motivations to fully understand what’s actually happening! it’s easy to kneejerk into protective, angry behaviour, and i absolutely do not fault those people who look at adam and see their bully/abuser and react thusly. it’s a sign of how realistically shitty he is and how well he’s written. however such a reaction also forgoes any kind of deeper analysis, which i think does a disservice to jay’s writing as well as adam’s actual impact on the story.

adam is just as much of a person as talita is in-universe, motivated by just as complex a web of experiences, opinions, memories, and ideologies. out-of universe, he’s how jay is communicating to the audience that talita’s feelings of alienation, unpersoning, social anxiety, and low self esteem are not without an origin. it tells people who aren’t in the discord or patreon or tumblr (specifically and primarily, people who will read this book once it goes into print) what life is often like for talita. if we only saw her having positive interactions with humans and aliens, it would overall flatten the story and her character and consequentially destroy her literary place as a metaphor for otherness and disconnection, because she’s have nothing to feel othered by, except perhaps her low self esteem, which isn’t enough to hold up the framework of her character.

sorry this one got long again. literary analysis is my passion. tldr; adam sucks but he has to exist because the themes of the story need him

  64. Oh the gasp I gumpsed at that invasion of personal space!

    1. Rad Internet Stranger

I’m sorry gumpsed?? Is that a word I’m too Australian to understand??

      1. I’m Australian too and I’m right with you there.

      2. it’s a meme of doing an “incorrect” past tense, sometimes based on other words’ past tenses, like “snow” becoming “snew.” this is one of the nonsense ones

        1. See also: the scream I scrumpt, or the meme picture with the text “Now rethink what you just thoke”

          All excellent wordplay imo

      3. australian rtts gang rise up

        1. MyUniverseinaBox

          YIPPEE

  65. I feel like this stunt might get adam thoroughly fussed at by the equivalent of HR and maybe even discharged from his internship YIKES.

    1. Ideally and hopefully, yes.
But if it doesn’t, and instead Talita gets reprimanded for manhandling him off the latter, then it will end up being motivation for her to just leave. Which is what our plot instincts are screaming is going to happen.

    2. Light_In_The_Fog

Thats Mel tho, and do we think they’re going to be decisive enough to do that? (no)

      1. Mel is Talitas supervisor, and thus the temps’ once-removed, but that doesn’t make him HR.

Though, if “HR” translates to “Cheevwut”, I’m pretty sure that Adam would disregard their authority even harder. Once he understands that he’s getting the pink slip for the events (if at all …), I’m not sure that he’d still be really listening to Ohwitiil chewing him out, even …

        1. * make them HR

        2. The Hollymonster

Cheevwut, though, actually has the will to make Adam’s life a living hell if he’s being a Problem. Unlike Talita, who’s been conditioned to be nice and gentle with squishy humans.

  66. Eeeugh! Uncomfortable! It really really doesn’t help that he pulled hard enough to move Talita’s whole head – that’s not just some idle light tug šŸ™

    1. Makes my messed-up neck ache just looking at it!

  67. Really great sense of motion on this page, wow. The violence really comes across. Yeesh.

  68. MyUniverseinaBox

    Woof, did not expect that.

  69. I wonder if there are cameras in that building that caught this incident…

    1. I would be surprised if there weren’t honestly. I mean they do all essentially live inside of space crafts in a hostile environment.

      1. Yeah that’s how Bip is watching. Which might actually be a problem if the footage needs to be pulled up for review.

    2. Where I work, cameras are not installed in locker rooms, gowning/decon rooms, or bathrooms.

      1. i even considered this to factor into his choice to assault her here, in a semi-private space where he might not have a camera/radio isnt on… and maybe because hes gotten away with bullying yao without significant consequence/xe hasnt reported him, he thinks xe isnt a threat here either…

  70. It’s sort of a relief to see how dumb Adam actually is.
I thought he would try a clever move, going to HR with a sob story how this giant creature grabbed him, while he tries to figure out how to be more efficient on the job.
Instead he goes for a Kindergarten Level of getting back, to feels like he is in power again…. he’s almost to be pitied. (Unless he is smarter than he looks and tries to provoke a bigger reaction than this from Talita, but who knows.)
I feel sorry for Yao and Talita though, it’s hard to give rise to a good group dynamic if you have such an toxic idiot in it.
Talita is also not a good boss, she should never have been forced into this position, but this was probably a hindsight on Mel’s part, too.

  71. You still going to tell me idle curiosity is as much a crime as straight up laying your hands on someone? At least Yao wants to learn but you all seem like the kind of people who are the reason we have problems. You’re the people like Adam. You bully someone for asking questions you bully me.

    1. No one said that??

    2. Did you repost your comment?

    3. what?? /genq

      1. People considered Yao’s awkward questions on the last page to be inappropriate due to being about Talita’s body and thus Kinda Invasive, and they (not Yao, the commenter)(idk the pronouns) took that as a personal attack on themselves and their own autism and have been being inflammatory towards other commenters over it since.

        1. That’s because they are inappropriate to an extent even if Talita dosent view her antlers as something private (like a menstrual cycle which I think people have subconsciously been comparing her antlers too based on some comments last page) I’m also autistic and I relate to phrasing things in strange blunt ways that can be seen as rude, if it’s making somone uncomfortable autistic or not that is wrong! Especially because she’s Yaos boss and they’re in a work setting. Idk that’s just how I feel about it. Disorders and disabilities don’t just give people a free pass to make others uncomfortable even if they really want to know stuff. Hopefully I worded this well it’s 3am for me lol

I did want to spell it out a bit cause the inflammatory comments made me want to explain the difference between you accidentally making someone uncomfortable and continueing despite being made aware. As long as you learn and make an effort not to make them uncomfortable anymore you’re good imo.

    4. Curiosity is unfortunately not a good excuse for asking invasive questions about someone’s body, especially when you have made no attempt to befriend or otherwise connect with them in the past. When compared to Talita’s human friends, its clear she actually doesn’t care that much about them seeing her shed her velvet and in a comic she straight up gives a fallen antler to Idrisah. The problem is that Yao asked the question in an inappropriate setting, just out of the blue, and its one of the only things xe has even spoken to Talita. Yes, grabbing someone’s face is worse than asking a question, but Yao and Adam are just two sides of the spectrum of these humans not taking Talita’s personhood and her right to privacy seriously. They exist to contrast each other.

  72. TALITA SEND HIM TO MEL’S OFFICE AND HAVE HIM EXPELLED

  73. Aw hell, Adam’s Super Asshole Mode got activated. We were only at like 30% before but now he’s reaching 95%. Dangerous levels of assholery. Please Please call sophont resources on his ass oh my god

also Yao looks so anxious nooo xey realized xey accidentally indirectly started something really bad noooo I’ve been in that situation ohhh it sucks

ohhhh my god Adam ohhhh I need uhhhhhh (thinks of lighthearted not especially violent yet still conveys a great distaste verb) i need him exploded

  74. That guy has a strong desire for death. Did he fall out of his crib as a baby?

    1. If so, that cradle clearly was the wrong height …

  75. valid to eat fingers valid to eat fingers valid to eat fingers v-

    1. not a human fingers! she’ll get sick if she eats alien meat!

    2. No! No eating human fingers! Human fingers are poison for Talita!
Upending an entire carafe of water on Adam’s head, however, is justified, nonlethal, and satisfying to imagine.

Fun fact: in German, “to wash sbd’s head” means giving them a good talking-to. Adam’s head needs washed. You agree.

    3. ghostwhitehorse

Lucky for Adam, Talita is not Sgt. Shlock.

  76. With such a weak instinct for self-preservation, I wonder how Adam managed to live so long.
Damn, it clear that he definitivly cross a line and Talita will not let that pass in any way. Now the question is if Mel will manage that propely… Pobably not, and Talita will not lets pass that too.

  77. lets all manifest Adam getting boiled in the next chapter

  78. Athelind Llewellyn Long

The last time I saw an expression of stunned, unbelieving horror that intense was when Animal Man discovered the fourth wall.

  79. I have known so many Adams lmao. Poor Talita, I hope things start to look up for her soon

  80. I still dislike Adam more by how he’s written than how he acts. He’s built to be some perfect asshole. Too perfect. Annoyingly uncanny, not realistically annoying :/
Can’t wait for the plot to progress past him already, he just doesn’t register as an actual character to me anymore.

    1. You know how some real life events are driven by such cartoonishly petty and mundane evil, that if it were written into a movie or TV show, anyone watching it would complain about how unrealistic it is?

Well I’ve dealt with an Adam or several in my life.

      1. I too have, UNFORTUNATELY, had an Adam in my life at one point. Some people just seem to forever retain a childlike lack of emotional intelligence or critical thinking skills.

      2. I thought that when I became an adult, I wouldn’t have to deal with children like Adam any more. But, nope, all my life I’ve had to take this kind of crap from “adults” like Adam. And it’s so difficult to get anyone to do anything about them, often if you complain, you’re The Guy Who Got Someone Fired, and if you don’t straight up get blacklisted, nobody will talk to you or sit near you.

Part of the reason Adam looks so smug is that he’s certain that he won’t face any consequences for this. And if this was mundane North American life, he probably wouldn’t.

    2. There are people in real life like this. I’m glad you’ve never had to experience them, but those of us who are part of marginalized populations have to deal with shit like this all the time.

    3. I’ve worked with multiple men like Adam, ranging from ā€œjustā€ micro aggressions to ongoing, severe safety violations that landed someone in the ER. I’ve had them joke about my health, and how much paperwork it would be if I died. I assure you, he’s distressingly well written.

    4. Uh-uh. He’s just like way too many real people who actually exist. There’s nothing fake or perfect about him.

      1. Light_In_The_Fog

It turns out already annoying people are really good at doing everything 100% annoyingly when they try to be annoying

  81. Well there’s your answer Talita. He DOES have a death wish!

    1. Just adding to make it clear, this isn’t a “Adam should be afraid of Talita’s body” thing, it’s an “Adam doesn’t fear touching women without their consent” thing.

  82. that is one face just begging to be punched
    (and or mauled)

  83. Report his ass into oblivion. Otherwise I’m going to trebuchet him into space myself. That’s straight up assault.

  84. Talita quit your job. Join bip’s emo band

  85. It looks like he didn’t even hesitate to grab the face of a two thousand pound predator and yank her jaws directly towards his face. Either he is way more suicidally idiotic than previously suggested, or he knows Talita well enough that he instinctively trusts her to not freak out and murder him, yet still chose to bully her. She is literally more than three times the size of a large tiger.

    1. “Adam should be scared of Talita because of her body” is not a pro-Talita stance.

      1. Commenters remember that Talita is a person and not a wild animal, challenge level impossible.

      2. I wasn’t trying to say Adam should be scared of Talita. I was just saying Centaurs look scary, and I can’t imagine someone who doesn’t know Talita that well to be so confident they could get away with what he did.

    2. Considering the comments Adam made about Talita in Chapter 2, I think Adam is trying to look brave by showing he’s not afraid of the scary hypercarnivore who he’s realized is a nonconfrontational ball of anxiety with no leadership skills.

  86. workplace abuse is fucked up. put this man in the torture nexus!!!!!!!

    1. I vote we put him in the centrifuge and make him dizzy lol

      1. evil coworkers get put in the pear wiggler

        1. I understood that reference šŸ‘†

        2. MyUniverseinaBox

          THE PEAR WIGGLERRR

      2. Run him out of town on a rail!
(of course, that’s how almost everyone leaves dirtball …)

        1. Challenge mode: imagine a redemption arc for Adam, where he realizes what he’s been doing is wrong, and is motivated to become a better person.

  87. I GASPED when I saw this page – I guess this answer a question I’d been meaning to ask for the Q&A sessions, that humans just have no concept of boundaries and can/will randomly touch other non-GMA, non-human sophonts because in human brains they look ‘pettable’ cause we get like that with real life WILD animals and this comic clearly shows how absolutely not okay that is! I wish for karma to happen to Adam.

    1. Oh lord, I would definitely ask permission if I wanted to feel somone else’s fur but yeah the other sophonts integument looks SO SOFT 😭 I’ve had like old people randomly come up to me and touch my hair (I’m ginger and have extremely long hair) and I never know how to get out of the situation. I wonder if bug ferrets and centaurs would enjoy being scritched or having a human pick through their fur (like the allogrooming humans and most primates do with eachother) if they were close friends. I suspect bug ferrets would be more tolerant of it given they are very physically affectionate with eachother. But oh god this concern will now also be in my head, I hope humans don’t just run up to people and pet them normally.

    2. I mean, Adam is an individual making very specific choices, not a representative of the entire human species. Even Yao is appalled by his behavior.

  88. dammit adam
I doubt Ixion will handle this well but part of me wonders if HR knows about Adam’s behavior *towards the other temps*. Like obviously it’s Talita’s choice to report how Adam treats her but if it turns out nobody told HR about the ‘yoinking Yao’s antlers’ incident I can see whoever handles this giving Talita a hard time for not intervening earlier.

  89. Get his ass in a SR (Sophont resources) meeting right now he needs reprimanding 😭 I desperately hope he gets fired/it goes Talitas way. That is no way to be treated, I agree with another commenter that they don’t seem so see her as a person or at least they don’t treat her with the human decency that she deserves. I wish I could give Talita a hug she deserves a raise.

    1. I need to study Adam’s brain I need to know why he thinks any of his impulsive acts are good ideas. I suspect he dosent really think before he does them. I can be pretty impulsive (because of adhd) but at least try my best and know not to dangerous stuff when in a professional setting. 😭

      1. In my experience, chronic lack of consequences has a lot to do with it

    2. Light_In_The_Fog

This brings up a great question – what is HR called nowadays?

  90. Physical assault, go directly to the unemployment line.

  91. Strongly suspect the follow-up from Adam will be ā€œoh, but you can grab me?ā€ Worse since it’s not a bad point to mention that picking people up is generally bad, but the point is made horrid by the way he made it and the fact it’s… Adam.

    1. He would absolutely make this comment but the difference is clear he’s doing it to be a lil shit and she was making an impulsive decision because the situation was dangerous and could’ve easily turned fatal. Like it wasn’t the most rational thing to do but it was the quickest way to get him down immediately. I feel like intent of the two yoink moments matters a lot lol why can’t he understand 😭

    2. And also the fact that by her grabbing him, Talita probably averted a serious accident. Caused by Adam.
In contrast, Adam yanking Talitas antler didn’t do anything good for anybody.

      1. Not only did him yanking on her face not help anyone, if she had pulled her head back out of reflex upon suddenly being grabbed, he would have gone flying. (He’d probably have whined about that, too.)

    3. Very much the kind of toddler brain we’re dealing with in Adam, yep.

      1. Toddler or senior… I have a certain family member, who, when you ask them to do, or not do, something, and they don’t like it, will MAYBE comply, but will definitely wait for an opportunity to misconstrue the request in a way that causes problems for the person asking, later.

  92. look i know talita isnt the kind of person that would bite his ass but i absolutely would

  93. I wonder what kind of person Adam would be if he learned from his mistakes and improved as a person?

    1. Excellent observation! What I like to tell people is, “you learn from zero percent of the mistakes you don’t admit making.”

      1. I think if he gets better he will immediately evolve into the Old Man person genre. I’m not referring to age I’m referring to Old Man as a genre of person.

        1. … I have a hunch that we’re not talking about the sameOld Man” here … ?

        2. @JoB I thought that was the Space Colony Ark and got really confused for a sec.

  94. yaos so stressed out xe gained eyebrows lol

    1. You made me go back and check: xe actually does not have eyebrows. I wonder if xey shave them or if xey’re biomodded with some type of “no hair anywhere except on top of the head” mod.

      1. Third option: artistic license. We haven’t seen any high-detail closeups of Yao yet, not like Idrisah crying, for example, or the main character art on the website.

  95. Y’know when though our biologies aren’t compatible and Talita is nice, I wouldn’t do that to an apex predator. Jesus, what a dipshit.

    1. Accursed Dirt Boar

I think he is doing explicitly cause Talita is an apex predator, she cant get too angry or else Adam can spin it in a way that benefits him, cause centaurs, do kinda have the power to kill a human relatively easily

      1. “I’m not scared of that stripey sock puppet,” was the quote, I believe…

    2. forget apex predators, do not do this to a goat, horse, buffalo, cow, or elephant. or hell just about anything, including humans, unless you enjoy getting bitten/kicked/scratched/punched as an instinctive startle response / anger response

  96. Accursed Dirt Boar

Oh i can see his game plan here, he is gonna go like “does it mean YOU can lift me and drop me then?”
And whit Mel being so passive is extremely likely nothing is gonna come out of this, Tali girly you need to get the hell out of here

    1. Athelind Llewellyn Long

Yeah, she needs to run away. Like, to the stars.

      1. this got me REALLY good

  97. WOA adam you caint just YOINK someone!
    honestly šŸ™„

  98. Adam is really well written! I’ve worked with people like him.

I’m interested to see how this is gonna be dealt with in the comic. šŸ˜€

  99. What the actual fuck Adam

  100. wouldnt this kinda be like pulling someones hair?

    1. That was what I thought. Technically, hair doesn’t feel, but that doesn’t mean grabbing it isn’t still serious.

  101. Obviously physically jerking someone’s face is worse but the common issue here among her temps is that nobody in this group really sees Talita as a person. I don’t know if they interact with all sophonts this way, maybe not since Avians and Ferrets have more social power and would probably shut that down with quickness, but Talita has been made to feel insignificant her whole life by aliens and humans. The group of temps is like a gradient of people treating her more or less poorly. Adam being the worst, Yao being well-meaning but ultimately not taking Talita’s privacy/personhood into consideration to satisfy xer curiosity. Clayton treated her with a little more respect as an authority figure and with him gone, you really see how much this group sucks lol.

    1. Now that you mention it, I think Clayton treats her as “boss”, which is well and good for a professional setting but still isn’t quite the same as being treated as another person.

      1. Agreed. And Jay’s choice to remove Clayton from this situation feels very intentional, it makes me wonder about if Clay would be the one human to stand up to his coworker grabbing their “Boss” like this, or if he would’ve simply been a bystander or pretend to have not seen it. Or maybe Mr Facejerk over here felt even more emboldened to do that move because the only sensible person in the bunch isnt there.

        1. From personal experience, just having Clayton in the background looking uncomfortable with it might have made Adam think a little. In high school, there were several times where I would have gotten several ribs broken, or stuffed in a locker, or set on fire, or pushed into a lake, but the “hey watch this” guy was always in the back, not participating, radiating discomfort, and that ruined the vibe for his friends, without any verbal communication, ever, and they would lose all their motivation and wander off. He never even had to speak up… they knew him well enough, and apparently they knew, deep down, that he knew right from wrong better than they did.

  102. Mel is about to handle this situation soooo well.

  103. Yao standing back there like “ah shit I started this…”

    1. Yeaaaa I feel so bad for xem here… Im honestly wondering not just how Adam’s gonna spin this story but if the other temps will back him up on it or if they’ll take Talita’s side. I bet a bunch of them will try to avoid having any sort of opinion on the situation altogether, which would make me so mad… I have hope for Yao at least

    2. yao immediately shriveling up and looking away, too. ohh adam definitely bullies the shit out of xem off screen. to me it seems almost like xey’re panicking over what to say/do internally while fighting back against the urge to just stay quiet and not draw attention, mixed with the guilt for having started the conversation in the first place (and probably guilt for not standing up for talita immediately like she did for xem in the first chapter)

      1. since he was bullying xem in an earlier chapter i do think this is somewhat implied especially given xer reaction. yao is a flawed character, all of the temps are and to an extent seem to represent human attitudes toward talita; with the only other temp that seems to respect her, clayton, being professional but completely deattached. yao definitely reads as someone who maybe can’t understand social cues, i don’t believe xe has any malice when asking talita the antler question (the contrary, i think it is xem trying to show genuine interest), but xey are probably not realising talita’s discomfort and that this is an inappropriate thing to ask (especially in a workplace environment) where xey maybe might with a human.

i do really like yao. even if super detailed future appearances of xem are probably unlikely, xe is my favourite temp. showcases potential for future growth and i think also very sympathetic. xey should get to punch adam in the ribs

        1. I suspect that xey are too timid for that, much like Talita. Adams of any description have a knack for choosing their victims well.

        2. Until I read other people’s comments, I took Yao’s question as a conversational gambit. Xe probably should have asked permission, first, though.

But this is already a gray area in real life: how friendly or affectionate can you be to a coworker? And how can you tell how much of a friend someone is, when everyone is expected to act friendly and cordial in the workplace? I’ve been lambasted before, for suggesting some extremely flirtatious remarks might be work-inappropriate, because everyone else saw the remarks as being “just a compliment.”

And with Talita’s antlers, we don’t have any really good Human analogues for Yao’s question. I don’t mind when people ask questions, in good faith, about my thick glasses and poor eyesight… but that’s not exactly a bodily function.

  104. MonstieMunchies

I love Talitas hands in the 3rd and last panel, the tension! the angle! the complexities!

  105. I think Talita is legally allowed to eat him now.

  106. The kind of worst part is I think Adam recognizes on some level that he can only get away with this in this very specific circumstance (it being Talita and him also being able to say “well she did straight up grab / manhandle me this one time in front of all of my coworkers, I thought it was cool to just start doing this”), regardless of if Talita lodges a complaint or not and regardless of the fact that it’s still rude (like sure, you don’t technically have blood in your teeth / don’t feel them the same way you do your fingers but that doesn’t mean that people should try grabbing and yanking those either).

Had it been a a Centaur that wasn’t Talita (very much socialized around humans), I could see this going very differently (and some part of me hopes that if Adam somehow manages to stick around long enough to see other Centaurs that he gets schooled very quickly by said Centaurs).

  107. I really hope there are repercussions for his actions, not just this but his general recklessness too. but I have a feeling things won’t go Talitas way

  108. Hooooooooboy… I genuinely wasn’t expecting him to physically assault Talita like that. I know he grabbed Yao’s horns from xem earlier in the comic, but this is a whole new level of yuck. I guess the foreshadowing was there all along… dayum. Adam is very lucky that Talita knows her strength and is not interested in eye for an eye.

Jay I am SO sorry you have to deal with the absolute trash happening in your comment section right now. You have every right to disable comments on certain pages if you have the capability. I wouldn’t blame you for it.

Depicting these scenarios is incredibly important for the world setting and I applaud you for handling these kinds of topics. I wish people were acting more mature about it.

    1. didnt he also grab phoebes ears? or am i just misremembering him. i know he was calling her a biomodder / gmh

      1. he didn’t grab phoebe’s ears, but did make snide comments about her being a GMH when she isn’t

      2. He straight up snatched one of Yao’s horns out of xer hand… maybe even off xer head, and played keep-away with it until Talita *requested* that he stop.

  109. … at the very least, he just sunk whatever chance of winning management over he had to begin with. And yes, I’m hoping that he won’t get to present it as “damn alien fired me, the entire team knew they didn’t like us humans” to whoever his next employer may be.

(Aside: Is it just me, or is the transcript on this page not collapsable as usual?)

    1. That happened two or three updates ago, too, but was fixed (fixed itself? Idk) a day or two later.

      1. It’s fixed now, actually …

  110. FuzzySpiderPawz

Ohhhh goddddd I had a bad feeling this was gonna happen. I’m sincerely hoping Adam gets his ass fired over this omg.

  111. 😬😬😬

  112. Quick moment for how COOL this page is laid out, adds so much to the emotion of the scene, really well done!!! ARGGGGGH WE HATE YOU ADAM!!!!

  113. OH MY GOD HE REALLY WENT THERE
OH MY GOD THEY AREN’T GOING TO FIRE HIM ARE THEY
    OH MY GOD

  114. TotallySomebody

    Woah! That’s ASSAULT

  115. OOOH HIS SMILE PISSES ME OFF…… ADAM WHEN I GET YOU ADAM

    1. You are bullying me by bullying a character like me. You don’t treat Yao like a criminal for wanting knowledge. Not allowing people to ask questions is how you get people like Adam.

      1. i am not bullying you, im sorry but please leave me alone if you are going to come after me like this for gently criticizing a fictional character. i did not treat yao like a criminal and i dont appreciate you putting words into my mouth or others. i am not ‘not allowing people to ask questions”. please leave me alone and stop being so aggressive towards me. i dont like being projected onto or made assumptions of. and unlike yao i am not fictional but a real person with real feelings so please respect that.

        1. i like yao. i was pointing out last page how yao is making talita uncomfortable. the narrative and images in the comic pages shows how talita looks uncomfortable. does that make yao a ‘criminal’? no. and i never implied it did in any way at all, you are jumping to conclusions. i didnt say yao couldnt ask questions i just pointed out how xer question was invasive. thats all. it is a simple observation and me pointing it out doesnt make me a bully and i dont appreciate you saying it does. good lord. yao was probably not even meaning to make talita uncomfy but that was what happened. it was a social blunder at most and that fine i dont expect perfection irl or in my comics, least of all my comics, i welcome a flawed character. what i expect is not to get attacked for making observations and then harrassed with untrue assumptions about my character.

        2. If it helps you feel any better, a quick Google search of this person’s handle pulls up social media accounts where they self-identify as someone who enjoys trolling people. You deserve better than to spend mental energy trying to justify yourself to someone like that.

        3. wow, thanks for letting me know that Honey. I did have a ‘chat is this bait?’ moment in my mind but i went with the good-faith interpretation that this individual was actually being genuine and responded in kind.

  116. Man, genuinely, major props to Jay for making Adam sooooooooo detestable lmao. I’ve seen fictional bullies who are written as exaggerated monsters, and that’s fine enough, but the scope of Adam’s assholery is relatively small–he’s realistic enough to be TRULY infuriating. Not everyone knows a monster irl, but I’d wager that almost everyone knows an Adam.

    1. You’ve nailed it.

    2. Yeah, genuinely great characterisation. I know several Adams, for one. They all are rather believable characters. Who hasn’t met or been an Idrisah, with her conflict between her love for her family and her desire for independence? A Mel, well meaning but kinda bad at it? A Gillie, just wanting to be genuinely included for once instead of a charity project? A Clayton, Yao, Talita? I’ve met all of them with different faces in real life. Even Ohwitiil and Cheevwut, on-again-off-again love/hate relationship included. Luckily, they didn’t work together.

Which, do you reckon Cheevwut is to Ohwitiil what Adam is to Talita? They seem to really, really enjoy riling Ohwitiil up, and I think that’s much of Adams motivation in this scene.

      1. cheev’s got a whole different thing going on with ohwitill which can be summed up as “securing that gilf bag”, i don’t think theyre on a level close to adam here

        1. Yeah, but in their own words part of the appeal is very much testing how much they can get away with and have Ohwitiil still at their door come spring. Cheev is definitely not nice in this (not that they need to be – what a fictional character has to be is interesting. Beyond that, anything goes. Not that you don’t know that, but I feel it needs to be said: I do not object to the actions of any of the characters. I do in fact greatly resemble the “Sickos at the window ‘Ha ha, yes!'” -meme right now, even though I feel great sympathy for Talita and also Yao in this situation)

      2. I think its similar in the way you pointed out, the “i want to rile this person up” desire, but I think they come from different places/motivations. While Cheevwut does make jabs at Ohwitiil from what we’ve seen it doesn’t seem to quite come the place of genuine resentment that Adam has for Talita particularly after she’s now grabbed him and yelled at him in front of the other temps. Difference of “I enjoy messing with this person I’ve been working with for awhile” versus “I’m mad this person I have no respect/think I know better than for has a position above me”

    3. This is how kids bullied me in school, violating my personal boundaries and acting all innocent when teachers called them out on it.

  117. Undercooked Mothman

Invasive questions into invasive touching, this shit suucks. poor talita šŸ™

  118. Seastarcrunchies

He’s going to come in with some “you grabbed me so I get to grab you” bs isn’t he? -_-

  119. So, the answer to the question on page 225 appears to be “yes”. Seriously, dude, there’s no situation where this is even remotely acceptable workplace behaviour. At this point she really needs to just say “pack your bags, you’re on the next launch out of here”. And if she’s not backed up by management on this, she needs to leave herself. Which, I guess the story has been building to, so that’s just another motivation to get off that rock.

    1. If Talita does go to HR about it, Adam can hit back with the fact she grabbed him off the ladder… completely different situations, and Adam grabbing her antler is malicious, but still a problem there.

      1. No sane HR would have a problem with someone physically preventing someone else from putting themselves in mortal danger. The sanity of HR on dirtball remains to be determined, though.

        1. We know that Cheevwut does payroll, so maybe they also do HR? And judging by their, ahem, tumultous relationship with Ohwitiil they may or may not react appropriately to minor workplace assaults.

      2. I feel like this is part of Adam’s plan, yeah. He sees this yanking as ā€œjustifiedā€ because Talita grabbed him off the ladder. Of course we have the full context and it’s obvious to us that the situations are completely different, but if he’s charismatic and liked by the HR people he might be able to dodge discipline…

  120. Well that’s just rude and disrespectful

And of course just because she can’t feel him touching her antler doesn’t mean she can’t feel her head being yanked around by it

    1. Yeah, my hair is completely insensate. You can cut it, and I won’t feel a thing – my hairdresser does so regularly. Still doesn’t make yanking it painless, on account of it’s attached to my skin which very much does have nerve endings. What even, Adam.

Also, what a good and believable portrayal of your average petty bully. This is the kind of thing you’d see on any schoolyard. I love to hate him.

    2. Yeah, I mean the bone itself may not hurt her but his arm is so tense, there is significant force behind that pull. The neck is so easy to be sprained

  121. ADAM’S ACTIVATED HIS HATE CRIME SUPER

    1. this is a really good comment

  122. Adam is lucky that Tailita isn’t the kinda person who would have hit him back for that kind of thing. I feel a large number of other centaurs might do something like that.

    1. Very true, and oh yes

Actually got me looking forward to the day he might encounter one and do something like that to them. Can you imagine if he treated a matriarch with that sort of disrespect?

      1. Oh, hey, aren’t we all expected a clan of centaur temps soon? Imagine he tries to pull the same crap, not realizing what a timid sweetheart Talita is …

        1. Oh geez, here’s hoping!

    2. I mean, I likely would have reflexively kicked or swung at someone randomly jerking my head around. He’s very lucky she didn’t have that entirely warranted response.

      1. I bet if Talita wanted to, she could lift up at least two entire adult humans worth with her neck muscles alone, just by throwing back her head. Adam is lucky his grip strength isn’t enough to hold onto that antler.

      2. Yeah… centaurs are powerful as is and Talita _works out_ to deal with stress and anxiety. Of which she has A LOT of.

I’m reminded how a Pierson’s Puppeteer from Niven’s KNOWN SPACE stories can back-kick someone’s entire chest flat in the rare case where the “fight” part of their fight-or-flight instinct kicks in (pun intended).

We all know though that Talita’s not going to go full Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky on Adam even if a few of us would consider her not only fully justified in doing so but guaranteed to see Jannah if she did.

  123. The “yoink” heard around the galaxy.

  124. I KNEW IT! I F’ING KNEW HE WAS GONNA DO THAT! I CALLED IT!

Also I have to say, you did a very good job with drawing the expressions, jay! Talita’s faces in each of the panels are the exact ones i made while reading each one, and that stupid little face of Adam’s looks more punchable than ever!

  125. Wow Adam, how emotionally mature of you -_-

Also since the root of the antler is still attached and has some blood supply (kind of like a nail bed I think I could be mistaken) Adam yanking on it probably wasn’t the most comfortable sensation.

  126. I could see it coming and it’s still stressful to see! Poor Talita….

  127. I KNEW HE’D PULL SOME STUPID SHIT. SMUG SHIT IN THE LAST PANEL
