Gillie: It's been many colors, having white hair makes it very easy to experiment. I spent a few years in college as pink, but I've settled on orange for now. The annoying part has always been staining my lashes and eyebrows to match. Idrisah has suggested I get gene therapy to become a permanent redhead, but that would probably make my body hair darker, too. No thanks, I'd have to shave even more often... Shikaviil having a hairdresser is a funny joke. Most people here cut their own hair. I just use a box dye.

because of the positioning of the eyes, do avians have to look at things from the side like some earth animals do? or is the curve of there eyes-sockets severe enough that the foremost eyes can look ahead?

Sounds like they do have some ideal angles, but probably have a habit of just looking at everything a lot of the time while they’re talking to people, and choice of angle with which to inspect something might be dependent partly on how much of their surroundings they also want to pay attention to.
So, at any given time, their head angle might look pretty arbitrary to a human. Most of the time, just held high to keep an eye on everything.
Which feels like it matches the artwork in the comic reasonable well.

I’m not an expert at all but from what I know it usually looks like vague hand gestures, a pause, or drawing out the last word you said. Linguistically, um is a filler word, meant to keep you talking while you think.

Gillie’s dialog is an English translation, not a direct ASL transcription. But there’s a lot of ways to portray that you’re pausing to think in ASL, including a “pondering” facial expression, fluttering your fingers, or drawing out a previous sign.

If/when you release more info about your conlangs, could you also have something about the ASL signs created for this comic? Specifically remembering the sign Gillie used for ‘wormhole’ and wondering what other ones I missed. (I know thats not what ‘uh’ is but its making me think about this)

I only know a very little smattering of Auslan (To greet students, and a few swearwords) and no ASL, so it all looks new to me! I do think her hands are beautifully drawn, I suspect the American audience is getting a lot more out of this than me! I should have asked her if she knows any more human sign languages than this ASL variant when I had the chance. Oh well!
