Sorry to the people asking Bip questions that they are extemely bitchy...

OfAllTrades asked: Hey Bip! I was wondering: What do you like to do as a hobby/in your free time? Do AI even have hobbies or free time?Bip: Ugh, squishy people... Do you know how you sound? "Surely, because I can only conceptualize you as a talking tool, you have no desires outside of tirelessly working to produce goods and services for me!" I used to have a vibrant social life. You know, before a giant hole got blown through it!!
Zuorai asked: Calcery, what do you do when you're not working?
Calcery: Oh, you know, keep in touch with friends, read databases, browse the extranet, catch up on news, sort my memories, plan for and execute upgrades and maintenance, prepare my audio-visuals for communicating with organic sophonts, et cetera. Somewhat related: one of my AI friends recently got me into kinetic executable art. It's... difficult to describe to organics, but they're files that when executed, construct and then destroy a
database in a pleasing order. I've made a few but I'm not nearly as talented at it as my friend. I like to execute their files in my background processes while I'm doing less intensive work.

Wow Bip, geez, that’s one way to put it. Is gallows humor an AI trait, or uniquely Bip? (I’m thinking the latter option.)

You know, I’ve been wondering, Calcery says they prefer not to have a face but then they use a symbol to represent themself. Do they realise that’s a form of face??
JoB
Then every nation with a flag, every company with a logo, every person with a hand-written signature, yadda yadda would similarly “have a face” that way? I’m not sure that the term would remain very meaningful (or different from “ID”, “(nick)name” and the like) if it were stretched to such an extreme …
Phlosioneer
I’m surprised neither of our AI characters have mentioned simulations or games. Surely some AI must enjoy making a virtual world and playing around with it?
Ruby
Some out there must play Minecraft 50.0
Teltze
Bip, do you want to play Last Fantasy CXL with me? I could use a few people for my raid squads.
MyUniverseinaBox
Wow Calcery, ‘keeping in touch with friends’ ig Talita isn’t one of them HUH. Lil ass. Leaving that poor alien horse in the dust.
Phlosioneer
Lol, yeaahhh that comes off quite hollow in context here.
Claire
Classic workfriend vs real friend situation right there

A very handsome someone once asked a similar question to the first one: https://jayrockin.tumblr.com/post/723000239459598336/anonymous-asked-bip-what-type-of-things-do-you

The whole internal AI experience is fascinating to me, cause like. Theoretically they only ever perform one action, right, they move ones and zeroes around, so the world to them must be so much more… transmutable, than it is to us. Like imagine if a friend could send you a letter that actually *moved your body* in like a fun little dance or something.
Phlosioneer
They probably have clearly defined concepts of “bodies” in their memory space. Large swathes of memory that no other programs are allowed to touch. Like an antivirus or, more technically, a “ring 0” memory permission.
They also definitely have a much higher view of their execution than 1’s and 0’s. From other lore on the site we know the AI mind is a tangled mess if inspected closely, and their sentience emerges from the result of that mess. AI don’t understand how their brains work, exactly. However, other lore has indicated they’re modular, and their memories and some of their skills exist as separate processes with clearly defined boundaries that they can remove at will. Though it’s unclear how easy- you can remove a tooth “at will” but you really don’t want to! Bip dumped a lot in the transfer to phones, but that was an emergency.
I think the closest analogy would be to imagine if your brain had some SD-card slots for memories, expansion slots for skills (matrix-syle), and you had a supercomputer glued to your arm. You are still “you”, you still interact with the world at a very high level of understanding, but there’s all these additional layers you can add to yourself, and you also just constantly have instant access to a supercomputer for whatever you want it to do.

Every time I see an AI bring those files up (I think it’s happened twice now, the other with Bip?) I think of those sorting algorithm videos.
Arcstone
I fucking love the idea of sapient AI’s having a form of art that organics cant even begin to comprehend due to not being able to perceive digital data in even close to the same way they do.

I’m going to be mulling over the implications of calling anything virtual “kinetic” for a long time, though in a way, it makes sense.
I think what Cal is describing is a little like a Rube Goldberg machine or other entropy-based kinetic art. Except that these create themselves as well as destroy themselves or put themselves into a stabler state.

Maybe something like Conway’s Life “diehards”:

Or, if you want more of an allusion to pet husbandry, Busy Beavers. 😉
Apollo235
IDK what his actual voiceclaim is but to me Calcery sounds like Al-An from Subnautica Below Zero
40
Oh my god Al-An, my husband, mentioned!!
Teod
“Keep in touch with friends”, oof, that hurt. I was kinda hoping there was an external reason they didn’t text Talita.
godspeed
Glad I wasn’t the only one thinking about that.
What’s even sadder is that Cal probably don’t have problems about keeping several live convos going, unless strained with many other tasks.
The only truely bitchy AI on this page imho.
qoala
Heartbroken that Calcery says he’s keeping in touch with his friends, but hasn’t texted Talita. D: D: D:
Pathfinder42
Like Bip said earlier, maybe they were just co-workers to Cal. It sucks but it happens, not everyone wants to be friends.
Pathfinder42
Good to know excel/database management macros still provides a sense of comfort to sophants all these years into the future.
Radix Appreciator
Calcery may find that organics relate to this more than anticipated! See: sorting algorithm videos. Radix Sort my beloved…

bogo :]
i like the compilation videos that play sounds
Common Handle
I wonder what it’s like to have something independently chugging along in the back of your “head” while you’re doing something else…
Also damn bip are you doing OK over there. [← question that would get an even bitchier response]
Rach
Probably feels the same as humming a song to yourself or thinking about The Characters when you’re working. A nice flow of background noise.
whirly
i imagine it might be something like listening to a podcast while cleaning your room…
