Clayton is not “evasive”. He’s straightforward and is showing he has hard limits as to what he should be concerned with and what he’ll answer to. And he’s being very direct about it.
Not even a little bit evasive. If I didn’t already have three top favorites, he’d be in the top three. As it is he has to settle for being in the top five… or six. Look, he’s an “A” tier character, not an “S” tier like Gillie, Cheevwut, and Siriwit.

Yeah, Clayton’s one of my favorites, too. I wonder if keeping his head down and just doing his job is somehow what forced him into temping. Maybe he’s been accused of “insufficient enthusiasm for the company,” or lost everyone’s trust by not taking a side in office politics.

On Clayton ;just being a temp’:
Maybe he just doesn’t want to live there. As a temp he does his contract and can leave with no strings. He’s not signing on for the long term, the company has no expectations for him beyond his contract, etc. Temping on a good contract with high pay can be very fulfilling. Not something we see outside of migrant farm work anymore, but it used to be a lot more common in the old days (think pre-1950s). Now you really only see ‘high pay’ temp work in highly dangerous jobs like the seasonal fishing industry, merchant marines, etc (migrant farm workers are tragically underpaid).
Also, not sure he is a temp, he gives me “was here before the temps” vibes, I’ve been thinking he was basically Talita’s only “permanent team member” and yeah, I think he’ll be promoted up (probably against his will) when Talita leaves on the Runaway.

One of the best deckhands I ever worked with was a colorblind old man who lived with his 90+ year-old mother on a farm in a remote part of Tennessee. He’d been an OS all his life because his colorblindness prevented him from getting an AB endorsement. The captains respected him, though, and always tried to give him “acting AB” positions when they could, because he really knew his ?#!%, never complained, never even raised his voice, and always got the job done, despite shuffling around like the saddest, frailest old man you ever saw. I wish I’d asked him more seamanship questions.
