Verengt gestures to the three smaller adults behind them, who each have a single trunk bar piercing. Two are light in color with thin black stripes and one is darker with wide stripes that break into spots. They all wear ornamental combs and collars.

Verengt: This is my entourage: Yaunda, Pay, Jachipt.

The three of them point at their faces with two fingers as their names are said. Verengt turns back to Talita.

Verengt: My workers are currently occupied with the move. You will lead my workers during our stay here. They are my children, I am trusting you to keep them safe. Bring any concerns you have with the arrangement to me.

Talita: Yes, of course. How many will be on my team?

Verengt: We have 8 able adults.

Talita: Do they have…

She looks at Verengt trepidatiously.

Talita: Any prior experience with working in exosuits…?

Verengt: We have worked for a recycling operation in microgravity.

  1. ProfessorBubbles

At least Mel got something right

  2. Hi it’s Jaguarsoup

Gosh I really hope the other centaurs don’t think Talita is being rude. I feel like not pointing her trunk at them when she’s talking might be like some equivalent of not making eye contact, plus she doesn’t know to do that little hand gesture greeting the others have been doing. It seems like Verengt understands Talita is nervous, so maybe she’ll cut her a bit of slack. I doubly hope that they don’t think Talita is being rude/uncomfortable because of Verengt’s scar/facial difference! They’ve probably had their fair share of people being uncomfortable/weird around them because of that, and this is already awkward enough for Talita without the added misunderstanding.

  3. I like this group already, they’re so caring to Talita. Pay already interests me and Verengt is so kind and genuine! I hope Talita and the clans relationship doesn’t falter after more interactions… (and I hope Talita feels more comfortable around them over time, Mel really didn’t think ths through haha)

  4. Come on Talita, you could try to smile!
..Does she even know that they’re smiling? I imagine her previous encounters with centaurs have been too brief for her to internalize much about facial expression. And while there are definitely resources on the internet about reading centaur faces, I wouldn’t be surprised if she has avoided looking at them.
These centaurs’ expressions and body language look so much more natural than Talita’s.. It helps that she comes across to us humans as nervous and not knowing what to do with her hands, but still you can see that the way these native-culture centaurs carry their heads and hands and speak from the trunk is natural for their bodies.

Thinking back to Talita’s conversation with Mel about Adam.. They did well sourcing the clan, and seemingly on briefing them, but they’re still “doing what Talita needs, not what she wants” as a parent in a pretty clumsy way! Oh well, at least Dirtball will be a workplace able to accommodate centaurs from now on. That’s pretty cool.

  5. I love Verengt, they seem so nice, even though they’re calling out Talita’s bug eyes lol.
It’s interesting seeing the contrast between her and the other centaurs body language.

Even though half lidded eyes are the default centaur expression it’s hard to read Pay’s expression in the last panel as anything other than a lil peed off, I would be overthinking everything if I were Talita.
On that same line of thought I’m really curious to see what Jachipt is like..

    1. Hi its Jaguarsoup

Ohmygosh yeah I was too busy thinking how they would be reading Talita, I hadn’t even thought of how she might be reading them. A misunderstanding on both ends here, maybe. Poor Talita

  6. Verengt’s belt accessories look like Chatelaine!

  7. I really like the contrasting gestures. ie her trunk pointed right at the listener vs Talita’s curled under. ahggggg Talitaaa

  8. When I was looking back at the sophont culture notes earlier, I was wondering whether we would see eshik representation in this entourage, but they can’t be Shess…no hats! Nightchaser nomads, I presume, since they are all Talita-sized or smaller, with mostly lighter coloring and the upper trunk bar piercings. Jacipt might be married in Shess or Shta? But presumably male, given the height difference between him and the matriarch. IDK really, presumably there is a lot of individual variation in every species, and mixed ancestry is always a possibility. I always feel a bit rude “staring” at fictional people like this, but it’s so interesting to speculate…

    1. jachipt is probably male, just by virtue of being entourage and corroborated by the height difference. they def look shta to me, and the others look nightchaser

  9. Actually, this meeting is going better than I expected… so far.
I think the real fun will begin when these guys spot the Runaway.

    1. Hi it’s Jaguarsoup

True, with their distance vision like Talita’s, they’ll definitely notice it and even more so notice how nervous Talita is gonna be when/if they ask about it..

  10. Talita’s antlers give her age away, but I wonder if she looks young/childlike facially to these other centaurs. Imagos almost always have wide-opened eyes in a lot of drawings I could find. Verengt even pointed this trait out specifically.

  11. The Opossum Witch

    foreshortened centaur face ( /x°)

  12. talita your xenogender keeps fuckin me up in conversation

  13. i like how you can really Feel how strange Talita looks and acts to the other centaurs and yet! its difficult to identify the subtleties of the the centaur’s expressions. a polite smile, *maybe* a side eye, but beyond that, ?????
I also feel like talita must look very bald to the other centaurs and having fun imagining what the perception equivalent might be. maybe like meeting someone wearing nothing but a sports bra, short pants, and a full toolbelt.

    1. ok but wait thats kind of a cool fit. especially since she’s like buff. talita aura confirmed

    2. honestly that also just occurred to me. she’s covering her whole body but it’s very form-fitting so i almost feels more revealing than the clan having bare chests. from what we’ve seen, centaurs definitely trend towards drapery and skirts, so talita is essentially wearing a spandex suit with a mechanic’s apron and cargo shorts over top of it in.

HOWEVER, centaur modesty standards trend towards being a lot looser than humans, and talita 100% reads as a worker just by mannerisms alone, so they’re probably like “wacky outfit, lol” and not thinking much else

      1. They might assume it’s for safety/practicality reasons. Someone working with moving machinery or getting in and out of pressure suits wouldn’t want to be wearing flowing clothing during work.

  14. The difference in how the other centaur carries themself compared to Talita is so interesting. Not only do they not worry about hiding their trunk away from who they’re speaking to the way Talita does, they actually intentionally keep it pointed her direction when speaking to her even as they look toward their entourage. That’s such a fun detail

  15. Uh oh, Jachipt didn’t smile

    1. jay’s said their face is “bored neutral”, so, just didn’t feel like smiling politely i guess

      1. for those curious, jay said this in reply to the sixth comment on the tumblr post they made for this batch of pages

        1. oop, i was counting backwards, it’s not the sixth-oldest but the sixth-newest at time of posting. the last comment on march 28 in my time zone

  16. What, Talita, you seriously thought they’d just hire some random centaurs regardless of whether or not they had relevant experience? Mel may be many things, but they still gotta make sure the work actually gets done and done RIGHT around here.

No, I suspect any problems that arise won’t be from that at all but rather culture clash. But then that has been the whole reoccurring theme of the comic, so…

Though I would still want to hope that some benefit come out of this for Talita, because she has been avoiding her own species culture quite a bit due to how much of an unknown it is to her, and justified or not, it’s probably only conflating the problem. Which is probably Mel’s thinking behind all of this in the first place. Mel’s methods are undoubtedly flawed and misguided, as well as not looking at it from any perspective but their own…but I concede there is a good intention–or a want for it to BE a good intention at least–behind it all.

Well, we’ll just have to see.

    1. I mean, I didn’t get the sense all of the current set of temps had much experience with working in exosuits prior to starting on Dirtball so it’s not a wholly unreasonable question

      1. Yeah, Dominic in particular (having to be told to only unlatch her helmet in athmosphere, forgetting the radio, I’m sure the list goes on) does not seem to have had much experience with exosuits. Talita is very reasonable to worry about having to instruct the workers in the most basic of basics.

    2. ‘misunderstanding’ Talita do you keep that antler-quilt hidden from plain sight? (I highly doubt there will be any miscommunication regarding that but its the first thing that came to mind that COULD raise red flags to other centaurs like. ‘what are you doing with a clan blanket thats not yours??’) I’m sure it’ll be somethin else…

      1. Oh geez, yeah, I bet that’s gonna be an issue at some point.

    3. i mean, hiring was the one thing mel WASN’T in charge of, so at least one person on this rock is competent at their job (hint: its cheev). i’m personally really hoping for a bit of an expectation-subversion : the clan notices how uncomfortable and unhappy Talita is and straight up echo Calcery’s advice to her: leave. they themselves are a clan of nomads who constantly move on. if an area isn’t working out for you – just leave! that’s the centaur way! i’m hoping if some culture gets imparted to her, it’s that.

      1. JUST WALK OUT
        you can leave!!!
        work
        social thing movies
        home
        class
        dentist
        clothes shoppi
        too fancy weed store
        cops if your quick
        friend ships
IF IT SUCKS… HIT DA BRICKS!!
        real winners quit

  17. From the centaur ethnicity page, these mostly look like nightchaser nomads, except for Jachipt who might be Shess or Shta in origin. Whereas I think Talita is of sunchaser nomad ancestry if I recall correctly.

No significance to this, I just was re-reading the Centaur world information page and thought it was interesting to match them up against the ethnicity chart.

    1. they def look more shta to me, based on the blobbier stripes and the hump on the nose. if it weren’t for the shade of their coat and the long stripes i might’ve guessed chuchae, just from how pronounced the hump is

  18. Well this is going well 🙂

  19. Hey I’m trying to find those guides to centaur facial expression, does anyone know where to find them?

      1. Gosh their default expressions look so irritated…

        I love it!

      2. That confirms what I noticed, actually. Presuming the names are in order from left-to-right, Yaunda and Pay have what looks like a standard freindly greeting. However, Jachipt’s expression is far closer to disgust than the other two, with the trunk down, head turned away and eyes narrowed. Still making a greeting because the Matriarch is there, but has clearly picked up on something about Talita that strikes a distinctly sour note with them.

We shall see, but I know which one I’ll be watching.

      3. Yep! Thanks :]

  20. Verengt’s belt accessory looks like a Chatelaine. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chatelaine_(chain)) I love it! Their clothing overall is gorgeous.

  21. Oh my goodness! Talita’s face is more angular than the other centaurs! They have a much more hounded head shape.

    1. Talita has very low body fat, which would otherwise fill in her cheeks a bit and make her face rounder. Verengt has a stocky build and an average body fat ratio, Jachipt has a leaner build with sharper cheeks more like Talita (albeit they are not shredded).

      1. Right, because lots of exercise is her dysphoria coping strategy. (Also I imagine it’s easy to avoid overeating when none of your food tastes very good…)

        1. I’m only mentioning it because, if I read correctly, I recently learned there are two similar terms with somewhat different meanings.
In the comic Idrisah mentioned body dysmorphia specifically, not dysphoria. Talita might have both given her upbringing, but I just wanted to bring up that difference.
(If dysphoria was mentioned elsewhere by the author then please forgive me and correct me; I haven’t been able to follow all the comic/character lore on all the different platforms as thoroughly as I would like.)

  22. I wonder whether Talita’s out-of-season antlers signify anything to this clan about her health or habits. Do they know she’s not getting enough sleep? I wonder what else they can tell about her health at a glance.

    1. Do centaur antlers necessarily come in all at the same time planet-wide? I was under the impression the timing was clan- or region-specific.

    2. They probably don’t know she’s out of season. If her biorhythms were ever in sync with the centaur homeplanet, decades away would have certainly thrown them out of whack, whatever her habits.

      1. Heck. Travel far enough, even through a wormhole, and relativity will throw all of your clocks off.

  23. What I appreciate is that in spite of all Talita’s catastrophizing about the situation, everybody is still polite. I love how the conflict isn’t strictly violent, it occurs through a series of miscommunications or understandings or people simply having different ideas about what is best for them. I can only imagine what might happen here.

  24. I’m low key hoping that the centaur clan decides that for Talita it would be in her own best interest to be somewhere safely AWAY from that incompetent Mel and able to become more confident in her own species and self
Honesty I’m almost wondering if the humans had contacted the Nightchasers or not because something tells me that the culture is different enough that Talita might just have been adopted as a member of a clan… and knowing how humans nowadays think they might not have considered talking to the Nightchasers at all, since well she’s from a different ethnic background, so the clan here might respond to her situation in a new way one Talita hadn’t encountered before (I kinda hope that we can see these centaurs again in the future wouldn’t it be interesting if they decided to teach Talita about her own people- if I met a human raised by a non human species and they acted like her (anxiety ridden) I’d look to help them learn about human life and try to help them be comfortable in their own skin)
Talita Needs at least one centaur deciding to try and rectify the damage caused by her estrangement from her own species and someone who actually cares about her mental well being

    1. I don’t think the recommended course of action was unique to the Shess. I think they might still be receptive to marrying her into the worker pool but that’s only because she’s an adult with desirable traits, not a relatively helpless imago. Not sure where the info would be now but I remember reading that centaurs are fairly hostile towards infants that aren’t their own across the board. I don’t think the Gwailer clan would’ve been any different in that regard.

    2. I mean, this whole situation was caused by somebody else deciding the best course of action for Talita. I hope she leaves, too, but I want that to be her decision, not anybody else’s.

  25. Bruce Mickelson

This is a very interesting study in Centaur body language. Note that this is only the top entourage present. The personal jewelry and adornments are nicely varied. Verengt seems to be an experienced leader right off the bat, and has immediately established a clear line of authority and an understanding that Talita has technical knowledge that her workers will need. As long as Talita is thinking about technical matters she seems to have her footing. It is fortunate that the workers already have spacesuits and experience in zero-G. Jachipt seems dubious about Talita, but you cannot please everyone!

  26. It’s terrible to think that things will gone wrong; they need to gone wrong.

I really didn’t know what to expect from the Temp Centaurs, not except a aggression but I’m still impressed by the consideration Verengt shows toward Talita. It already saddens me to imagine things going wrong.
That say, it only Verengt for now, the matriache, the one which Mel has spent the most time with explained Talita’s situation, and therefore had the most time to prepare herself to act thoughtfully. Problems are more likely arise into the day-to-day interaction with workers, who are much less prepared and open to this unusual situation (a bit like Adam). The most tragic outcome would be if Verengt continued to treat Talita with respect and consideration, but that the matriarch was unable to rein in the behavior of her workers/childrens, because continuing to “protect” Taliat would put her in too difficult a position within the clan and call her status into question.

    1. I don’t think we can count on Mel to have adequately explained the situation, considering how much brushing-off they’ve done to Talita

    2. It may not necessarily be a “falling out” between the new Centaurs and Talita that set , what we think will happen in RTTS, in motion but maybe rather their skills after Talita has taught them that makes her presence/further employment unnecessary.

I think any sort of rift will happen between her and Mel if any.

      1. Huh, good point. If these temp workers learn their jobs well enough, they may become so good Talita is no longer needed. Or she may only feel she is no longer needed.
        .
Or, there may arise any number of conflicts and cultural misunderstandings that lead to her leaving.

        1. Hopefully it doesn’t take the clan being competent for Talita to feel comfortable leaving, she was already unhappy on Dirtball.

  27. Cheevwut did an actual good job sourcing the crew…

  28. Kudos to Cheev for the quality hiring. At least somebody keeps this place running.

    1. That’s a great point about Cheevut being responsible for sourcing now. My major worry was based on Mel chosing temps again as Talita told Tod they did for the current humans but looking back it seems Cheevut just recently got promoted so they probably were not in position to source the last temps. Looks like Dirtballs sucess (employee wise) now rests on Cheevuts shoulders.

      1. Still possible Mel said a bunch of dumb /misleading things to Verengnt about Talita though since she seems knowledgeable and experienced with humans, maybe she could tell from the tour that Mel is a somewhat unreliable middle manager type.

  29. Noticing how Verengt is continuously positioning their trunk to face towards Talita while speaking, even when looking away. Presuming this is regular practice with Centaurs, Talita must seem either shy or shifty considering she turns her trunk inwards fairly exclusively. Interesting culture shock here. Also noticing the centaurs making a very specific gesture when introducing themselves… I hope Talita isn’t coming off as rude. She might be.

    1. If I remember correctly, Talita turns her trunk away because she doesn’t like how people stare at it!

      1. yes, of course! she’s very considerate to her human peers for this, i’m just anxious to see how the other Centaurs begin interpreting her. Their gestures and facial expressions towards each other are so different, it’s bound to cause miscommunication, what with Talita being so adapted to human socialization. The other centaurs might be more wary of her… I noticed Jachipt is keeping their trunk curled in as opposed to the other 3, who are extending theirs towards Talita. Jachipt seems unsure, possibly judgemental… maybe thinks Talita looks suspicious or disrespectful. we’ll find out!

  30. How is it that after one page of conversation I trust Verengt more than I ever did Mel?

Also those monsters are not all so scary like you made them out to be.

    1. Right? I feel like I was conditioned to expect something like smug superiority from the centaurs, just expecting everything to continue going horribly wrong. But so far Verengt is like… great.

At first I was eager to hurry up and get Talita out of here and this situation, but now I’m very curious to learn more and see what Verengt will teach Talita (and us!)

      1. There’s a reason Verengt is the matriarch, and it plainly isn’t them having physically fought and overthrown the last matriarch. They’re obviously a good diplomat, and adept at cross-cultural communication (for starters, they speak Jovian English, as do at their entourage and probably at least some of their workers).

  31. Given the centaur expressions guide (https://jayrockin.tumblr.com/post/674032871372111872/talita-is-a-weird-fringe-case-with-very-human) I’m going to say they have a mix of happy/neutral expressions

    1. Jachipt’s trunk is curled in a lot more tensely, and their eyes are much more narrowed, which is making me think they’re (at best) tense about the situation, and possibly affronted by Talita/think she’s being rude? But the other two do seem moderately pleased to be here, which is something!

  32. What an anxious detail it is to notice that Talita has always spoken with ther trunk tucked towards her neck while the Matriarch keep hers raised and pointed directly at her conversation partner the entire time, huh.

    1. If I remember right, I think in an AMA or something similar it was mentioned that Talita tucks her trunk inward when speaking because people tend to stare at it if she doesn’t, which is both awkward and means they aren’t actually watching her facial expressions at all. But other centaurs generally direct the trunk outward for speaking, the same way humans tend to face towards the person they’re speaking to. Actually, I don’t remember if we’ve seen this with Talita or not, but it wouldn’t surprise me if a centaur who’s in the middle of something and can’t look away would just respond to someone while pointing their trunk at them to better direct the sound!

  33. trunk foreshortening looks so silly lol
yaunda and pay seem nice!! smiley smiley. jachipt seems standoffish, or maybe just shy? i think their facial expression is fairly close to neutral but their trunk seems tucked pretty tightly, which makes me compare it to the disgust example from jay’s centaur expressions page—maybe disdain, or something? perhaps they didn’t want to come but were overruled, or perhaps they dont like tall buff people, or perhaps theyre tired from the move and want to get to bed already. much to consider. most likely it’s just a neutral face but i like thinking about alien expressions <3
    post i'm referencing: https://jayrockin.tumblr.com/674032871372111872

    1. the secret option is that Jachipt is the cool nonchalant one of the entourage trio (although they do seem to have more tension in the mouth area than the others do, no clue what that signifies in this specific context though)

      1. Possible that they are interpreting Talitas body language as rudeness towards their Matriarch.

        1. ahh, so like. “I’M gonna be polite even though you are being SO rude rn”

  34. Mango The Captain

I can’t believe this is the calmest scene in the chapter so far (goes to show that both us and Ralita were worrying too much) (by us I mean me)

    1. Mango The Captain

Not to say that Mel should have done it this way, of course

      1. Given Mels history of hiring bad temps I’d say it was a reasonable worry. Verengnt’s a calming presence inspite of Dirtballs management.

  35. i love the differences in body language between them, verengt pointing their trunk directly at talita while she keeps hers curled up…… verengt’s arms folded up vs talita using hers to emote….. it’s peak

  36. Noticed that Talita seems to actually be taller than the others. Unless that’s just perspective/Talita standing on something.

    1. She’s lived almost all her life in orbital habitats or microgravity, so it would make sense that she’s a little taller than average.

    2. she is! it’s easier to see on the previous page, and the transcript confirms it by describing verengt as slightly shorter

  37. Verengt really is gorgeous, seeing more of their and their entourage’s outfits is like catnip to me. Their pants are incredibly pretty especially

  38. This scene is such a relief after the Talita Plinko that was the rest of this chapter and the previous one… we can all catch our breaths. Such an important part of pacing a story!

It definitely feels to me like it’s going too well. If this was one of my nightmares, it’d be at this point that everyone would turn hostile to me for no reason I could determine. But logically, I feel like there’s not going to be a marriage proposal, but possibly Verengt might be assuming Talita is freaked out by their disfigurement rather than the situation Mel’s put her in… or there will be some weird catch.

One thing that stands out to me is that the Gwailer Clan have experience in *microgravity.* Dirtball is a *planet,* with significant gravity and a bit of an atmosphere. I’ve been researching spacesuits for a story of my own, and I’ve learned that a planetary suit has very different requirements from an actual SPACE suit! It can’t mass as much, it has to be sturdier, and it can’t use the vacuum of space to cool itself, but at the same time, it may need less cooling. If Clan Gwailer have EVA suits with heavy cooling systems and thruster packs, they’re going to have a very hard time working in Dirtball’s gravity.

    1. Ooh! This also reminds us of a video of an astronaut trying to get used to gravity again. He was trying to demonstrate how he’d gotten used to microgravity and the ability to just place a pen in the air and assume it’d be roughly in the same place seconds later. And then, midway through the demonstration, he actually forgets he’s in gravity and does it again by accident. The pen drops from where he “puts” it, and he’s surprised it’s not there. Then, as he looks around for it he remembers what he’s been saying to the camera, looks down, and you can SEE him feel stupid about it. Or, exasperated about gravity, at least.

It seems like in this setting, people go from gravity to microgravity and back more frequently, so they might be better adapted. But, people usually codeswitch or adapt by environmental cues. While at work, some of these centaurs might forget they’re in gravity, and there might be a larger number of dropped tools. (the story might not give us a chance to witness this, though)

      1. This is actually one of the 4-panel gags I’m putting in my comic!

        1. Mango The Captain

Ooh, you’re writing a comic? what’s it called?

        2. Emphasis on *writing.* Current working title is “Perfusion.” It’s not going to look like RttS for years, if ever, more like The Book Written By Tiny Paws. I’ve only been working on it for about a year, and due to my living and work situation, and my lack of experience, technique, and equipment, I’m not making much progress.

      2. I’ve seen that interview! The funniest thing is when he first looks around for that pen and cup, he looks up first!

      3. milk4evertoasted

god I hope its at least a gag

  39. Jachipt, put on ur damn happy face.

    1. Criminal side-eye

    2. My centaur standards that’s a politely neutral face haha. Just goes to show how jarring native centaur expressions are when you’ve gotten used to Talita’s human approximating expressions.

      1. While that could be true, my brain also tingles with ‘when an artist puts something in the background, they did so intentionally, so COULD it be real side eye?’ Even if it’s just ‘mildly perturbed their boss doesn’t know pertinent information about them’. But maybe REAL side-eye would be given with a wider eye, indicating more surprise.

  40. Despite how uncomfortable this whole situation is for Talita… is it wrong I’m really excited to see the Clan’s EVA suits compared to hers? I wonder if their helmets allow for their trunk to move freely, unlike in Talita’s design?

  41. “We have 8 able adults” oh dang, so that means we haven’t even seen half of the adult centaurs in this clan. many more people we have yet to see… exciting!

    1. With three entourage members that leaves either four or five workers, depending if Verengt is counting themselves due to the possible larvae.

      1. I think Verengt means that they are detailing 8 of their workers to Talita, or possibly a combination of workers and entourage.

With at least 4 kids to raise, and the care Verengt themself needs as a nursing mother, I expect they’re keeping a worker or two to help the entourage and Verengt’s father.

        1. where’d you get “verengt’s father” from?

      2. verengt says talita will be leading their workers, and they specifically refer to them as separate from the entourage in the first panel (you can also see that workers, entourage and matriarch are separate tiers in a typical centaur clan hierarchy on page 158 of the comic). considering that we have seen 5 of the adults (the matriarch, 3 entourage members and someone else, likely a worker) that leaves at least 7 others we have yet to see. :]

        1. On one of the previous pages, I’m not sure how far back- I believe it’s the page where Talita first walks in the door and tries to back out, I think it was stated that one of the Centaurs we see is notably missing is related to the Matriarch (I think its the other one with the dark tipped trunk like Verengt.) They might be Verengt’s father, maybe keeping an eye on the younger kids. From what I gather, we haven’t seen any of the workers yet, besides the younger individuals on the page where we first see these guys in general. If I’m reading this right, there’s a total of eight workers who are adults and fit to do the job right now, all of whom are currently moving the clans things in.

Then there’s the possible six larvae or pupating currently on the Matriarch if folks were correct in their pointing out semi rounded shapes covered by Verengt’s cloak. They actually have a pretty decent number in total if that count is accurate!

        2. @c Senaru there’s no other centaur w a dark-tipped trunk, the one that’s missing from this page and present on page 245/246 is the one whose eyestripes meet the dark edge of their facial disk. they’re dressed pretty similarly to the entourage and imo don’t really look much like verengt—their stripes are way longer than anyone else present and they’re missing verengt’s dorsal stripe. i’m not sure why they wouldn’t be mentioned here as part of the entourage, though, so… shrug. fancy worker? worker who wants to be entourage? elder? not that they look old, but i cannot at all judge the ages of any centaur past adolescence

        3. oh, no, i see now that they have two trunk piercings, which means they might be older

  42. man I know things are going to go bad eventually, but I really hope the that the fallout doesn’t end with the clan hating Talita or vice versa.
Pie in the sky hope is that *they’re* the ones to point out how bad this whole situation is for her and they give her the friendly encouragement she needs to [title drop]

  43. Completely lost track of what I’ve learned through the actual comic and what I’ve learned by comment section osmosis… but the ‘entourage’ are Verengt’s clan ‘Dad Squad’ as it were: the fathers of her children?

    1. right on the money, the entourage are the matriarch’s partners (mostly males obviously) that do most of the childcare work (once they’re done pupating and dont need to cling to the matriach’s back anymore)

you can just go to the “world” section so you can check for more info on the lore of this world,

  44. I wonder what they thought about that question… it is a pretty normal question given the context but I hope they didn’t take it as “you think we wouldn’t have this experience” and be mildly offended? Surely Talita asked the human temps the same question though, right? Again though it is a pretty normal question maybe I am overthinking it.
Well anyways, I think these guys will probably be much better at their job than the human temps lol
Thinks are looking mildly up, but also we are almost at the end of the book and we have yet to Runaway to the Stars or see a centaur cry yet. I feel uneasy……. Impending Doom is on the horizon….

    1. Also the Entourage seem to be really good at just standing around elegantly all the time lol

      1. *Kpop posing in the background*

        1. Music video with a centaur clan with the matriarch front and center and the Entourage as backup dancers behind them……

    2. Can’t blame Talita for needing to gauge what shes dealing with, l too share in her relief that Mel atleast found an experienced crew and not some space beginners who would work for cheaper to offset construction costs. Can also see why the Matriarch could find the question off putting, hopefully she can connect the dots that Mel gave Talita no information because Talita seems to subconsciously be protecting Mel here by not immediately admitting she was kept in the dark about them.

      1. sourcing the centaurs was Cheev’s job, not Mel, and unlike Mel Cheev has no ulterior motive about acquiring workers so is much more likely to seek people who had experience already rather then just “hehe centaurs”. surprise reveal that cheev’s actually competent

    3. One of the entourage is giving another one a bit of a side eye in the last panel, really hope this isn’t read as an insult😬

      1. It’s a neutral expression for centaurs, it just reads as a side-eye to us.

  45. Would that wound have had an effect on Veregnt’s ability speak at lenght? It looks Like it would have intersected with a vocal lung and Id imagine that would result in a particularly soft spoken tone or needing to speak in shorted sentences.

    1. You would be correct, that’s how Jay characterized Broken Crown’s voice back in 2022. Verengt has the exact same injury.

      1. Oh thank you! Very cool, I hadnt heard of that. Excited to see if we learn what caused the wound. Ive not heard much of war within the world building, so unsure if it was from conflict or perhaps an accident of sorts. Either way very cool that the centaur anatomy houses the vital organs in ways that wounds like this are survivable. albiet I image bloodloss is probably still a major risk with a wound like that.

        1. It’s in Jay’s creator comment on the previous page.

  46. im specifically really fascinated with the difference between Talita’s hand gestures vs Verengt and the enterage. The other centaurs for the most part look like theyre keeping their arms tucked when they’re not deliberately pointing. Meanwhile Talita is stuck in a classic “im nervous and have no clue what to do with my hands” situation. Even looking back on older panels, it looks like Talita does a lot of hand waves and guestures while speaking, which is also probably encouraged especially now that she’s learning sign lanuage. And of course theres the two fingered point theyre doing compared to Talita tending to point with only one finger (ie the way humans do it). Its really neat seeing the difference in body language as well as facial expressions.

  47. I wonder actually, considering Talita is human socialised, is she having as much trouble reading the centaurs facial expressions as us? Or has she read up on the subject in the past? Either way I imagine reading them won’t come naturally to her

    1. Light_In_The_Fog

I feel like Talita would be super avoidant of learning about centaur expressions. That feels super dysphoria-inducing

      1. Most likely, Talita said as much when asked if she ever went to the Centaur home planet.

  48. Not a bad amount of experience! I know that The Titular Event has to occur, but these guys don’t seem bad!
Also, obligatory “These are my three husbands. And yes, they smoke weed.”

    1. Do they smoke weed?

    2. Hard to know what might transpire, but yeah, an encouraging start; I would imagine working in microgravity requires even more competence than vacuum at 0.8g.

  49. ‘You will lead MY Workers’ I gotta wonder how common that is among Centaurs. To let another person boss around your clan… Wonder what the expectations for it is (‘keep them safe’ of course,,, but like anything else? ‘dont undermine my authority’ perhaps?). It does KINDA make me think the theorizing of ‘Mel advertised this as Talita potentially joining them’ being potentially possible… I’d like to think Mel, good intentions and all, surely isn’t *that* stupid. But god if they are I will eat my words.

    1. It kind of looks like Verengt has taken charge of their meetings with Mel, and gotten Mel to agree to something that works for a Centaur clan working under a clanless Centaur supervisor. Verengt is starting to look like an extremely *competent* take-charge type.

    2. It could also just be a neutral statement about the situation, I think – like, “I know you are the person my workers will be responding to, so I am trusting you to keep them safe”. If that makes sense?
Speaking as a non-native English speaker, it’s very easy to end up structuring your sentences in ways that native speakers read as implying something that wasn’t there – I don’t think Verengt is necessarily trying to make a big deal out of Talita being in lead of the workers while out in the field. I’d think they understand that if Talita is experienced in the work they’ve come to do, then she will be the one in command while everyone’s out and about. If anything, this feels like Verengt acknowledging Talita’s experience, effectively saying “I know you are capable of this work, so I will be trusting you to lead my workers properly.”
Or at least, that’s what it reads like to me. ^^

      1. Oh yeah, I put emphasis where there was no emphasis in the text. I was emphasizing information I thought was pertinent though. Cause they are THEIR workers, so I just wonder how normal it is for centaurs to let other centaurs give their clan the business. I feel like maybe in larger, settled settings, maybe it *is* potentially not unlikely. Inter-clan cooperation has to occasionally involved inter-clan hierarchy and authority too surely…

      2. Good point, as a second language, Verengt may not have access to anything but formal Jovian English.

  50. i love getting more interaction with them!! hhhh. i hope this goes as well as can be for talita.

  51. i like verengt a lot so far! it’s a shame talita had to meet them under such stressful circumstances…
also it’s neat to see “normal” centaur expressions/body language compared to talita, especially facing their trunk towards another person when talking. i like the little pointing thing they do when introducing themselves! and the entourage smiling :] (well two of them are at least!)

  52. I’m on the other side of this now.

I think Talita is going to have a massive anxiety attack, not because these are Centaurs. I think that’s passed for the most part.

I think it’s that they’re Centaurs and going to be really good workers, and extremely fucking good at following directions, and that’s going to make her go “WHAT AM I DOING WITH MY LIFE.”

    1. Oh man, like a “Oh no, having competent and respectful coworkers makes me realize exactly how bad the situation here has been the whole time” kind of situation?

    2. Maybe Talita will end up crying because the Gwailer clan are so NICE to her… although Jay may be messing with us and it’s one of the kids that cries.

  53. (Minor transcript – image discrepancy: in the image, Talita’s last line is “Any prior experience working in exo-suits…?”, but in the transcript, it’s “Any prior experience working EVA suits…?”)

    1. Huh, just from a writing perspective, I wonder what would have caused the change. (Not criticism, just speculation.) I assume the comic is drawn after the script is written and the transcript is adapted from the… script-script. So if I had to guess it was EVA suit first and exo-suit second. Maybe Talita wouldn’t be sure if they’d know what “EVA” meant (given the ESL nature of the centaurs and the bad experience with her last temp crew) and went for an easier to understand word?

      1. Jay has mentioned before that the transcripts can be difficult for them. I expect it’s because they’re entirely peripheral to Jay’s work on drawing the comic for physical publication.

      2. The reason is boring but also the explanation is long. The dialog was written on the drawn rough pages first, then I made a barebones dialog-only script for editors because it’s easier to annotate (I never make scripts unless forced to), then I started working on finished pages and sometimes tweaked their dialog. To provide transcripts I copy from that document I made for editors and add panel descriptions, but sometimes I don’t catch the dialog changes I’ve made. Most of the discrepancies that leak through are just shuffling words around to tighten dialog. EVA suit was changed to exosuit because it’s more generic. ExtraVehicular Activity refers to suits for working on the outside of a spacecraft, which is not really what Talita does on Dirtball. Assume any other change you see is for equally dull reasons

        1. I’d fully expect those who do work in (near-)vacuum to just shorten it to “suit” as a habit.
It’s not like even the human temps, once on Dirtball, could (misunderstand and) conjure a tuxedo out of nowhere. 😉

  54. Love how this interaction is pointing out that the centaurs are not at all the problem – Mel thrusting Talita into this situation without even warning her first is the problem. I really hope that if Talita runs that Verengt and co aren’t offended or think it’s because of them.

  55. Oh okay I definitely underestimated how much of the arrangements were already worked out. Talita’a accommodation situation was so bad for her coming into her field and I thought it was gonna be like that Everywhere lmao… kind of ridiculous in hindsight
Happy that Talita seems less and less nervous. I wonder how the motion of Not pointing her trunk at the people she’s speaking to comes off to centaurs…

  56. Noticing that Jachipt is not trunk smiling like the others, getting to see more centaur body language and expressions is so cool

    1. also looking at the transcript it notes that the entourage members all have one trunk piercing vs Verengt who has two so i wonder if its a social signifier, definitely not the same thing but the first thing that comes to mind is wedding rings

      1. Considering the other adult we’ve seen had 2 bars, and based on a comment by Jay we know one of the non-entourage members has parental connections to Verengt, I think you’re completely right about them being a social signifier. I’d be willing to guess the other workers dont have a piercing there

        1. The culture section says that among Nightchasers which most of them are, the upper trunk gets pierced when a centaurs comes of age and then they get more as they age and for significant life event type things. So definitely a social signifies!

    2. yaunda and pay: respectfully looking at talita while trunk smiling
      jachipt: BOMBASITC side eye

  57. I love their ear/back of face disc? accessories. Very beautiful. Makes me wonder how they’re put on

    1. i imagine theyre a lot like headbands or hairclips since a lot of what looks like solid head on the centaurs is actually just their “feathers” similar to how the strap for Talita’s glasses fits into them

      1. Transcript of page 245-246 describes them as ornamental combs. They probably just hold on friction.

        1. I am loving their comb game, and intrigued that Verengt doesn’t wear any. Possibly they feel their asymmetry would ruin the effect, and know they’d have a few extra combs left over because of it.

        2. @Vinemaple i think the combs are more of a gender/social caste thing, as traditionally entourage members are expected to keep themselves looking pretty

  58. Even though they’re an idiot, I would imagine that Mel would get in BIG trouble if they just thought “Centaur” and brought them to Dirtball without any idea of what their qualifications would be.

    1. Yeah, that’s a “Oh, you are completely unqualified for the basic requirements of your job. Goodbye,” situation.

  59. She’s probably thinking “well damn, wherever they got their suits from would’ve been good to know about when I had to make mine

    1. goddamn missing closing quote

      1. ” <- I got you

  60. “Did you bring your exo-suits?”

  61. fianlly, someone competent and in control. verengt stay goated please i already like your character and you’ve been here for two pages

  62. Ah, Talita is doing the thing where she hides her trunk while speaking. Compare with Verengt, who is mouth forward here. I have to wonder how Verengt interpret’s Talita’s expressions…

    1. this was my first thought too, verengt must have an interesting POV on this. If I’m remembering right the author mentioned once that most centaurs first impression of Talita is “nervous buff loner” but its got to be wild to be thinking that about your boss.

      1. I’m not sure Verengt thinks of Talita as her boss. It could be more akin to one supervisor to another, with the workers being the ones hired. Since Talita (and we) have no idea on the actual details of the arrangement.
Heck, given Mel’s unwillingness to hear what they don’t want to hear, even THEY may not be aware of the expectations they’ve given Verengt and the clan.

    2. Yeah I was thinking about that. Verengt might or might not have a grasp on humanized centaur expressions, but “mumbling into your neck” and how Talita is all folded up and pulling away is surely universal or near-universal discomfort signalling.

And unless Mel SAID SOMETHING about Talita being shy (which can’t be relied on) then Verengt would just have to guess why Talita is so uncomfortable, and sadly there’s at least a couple unfortunate possible guesses…

  63. I have a sneaking suspicion that there was a misunderstanding between Mel and Verengt. I half wonder if Talita leading the workers is a test run to see if she will work well in a clan and if she does the would want to marry her into their worker pool.

  64. This is going well so far but I’m waiting for *the question* to drop…

    1. What is *the question* in this case? Like where’s her clan or like a marriage proposal?

      1. I was thinking more where they are going to get their exosuits from.

      2. The clan question

    2. I was hoping someone had said this already! I agree. I wonder how much Verengt knows about Talita from Mel(‘s blabbermouth) already. If they don’t know she is a lone centaur, I wonder what rank they think Talita is? She is much larger and has her antlers, so she must have at least some aura even though she’s got wayyyy different body language. No doubt the entourage behind Verengt is thinking about it though.

To be honest I was almost just ad nervous as Talita for this contact! But it’s kind of heartbreakingly…. normal? Verengt is very chill. I think their clan’s stay will be really good for Talita, actually. I don’t think Talita is going to try and dip as soon as possible. She might enjoy having some actual respect… even if there will be bumps along the way.

      1. Although I feel like I wouldn’t want to be on Verengt’s bad side. There’s some steel in there, under all that friendly pragmatism and fluffy integument.

  65. noticing now that even when looking away, verengt always points their trunk to her when speaking!

    1. I wonder how much of that is a matriarch thing rather than a general thing

    2. Yeah! I was just thinking about how cool it is to see, like, the different way communication and expressions work/come across in the past few pages. And Talita’s still mumbling into her throat :’)

I am glad this introduction is going as smoothly as it is, though! Despite it all, people can be professional.

    3. Two Centaurs whispering to each other will put their heads together and stick their trunks close to each other’s ear.

  66. in spite of how incredibly awkward this is it is nice to see how well organized and prepared the matriarch is having already delegated the workforce and setting up a line of communication to Talita to further negotiate the arrangement or voice her concerns they seem to have this all pretty ironed out already
though I am curious, is that gesture of pointing to themselves with 2 fingers when introduced like a common gesture amongst centaurs? Because the entourage are all doing it as Verengt points them out and Verengt themselves did it in the prior page

    1. Sounds like Verengt could replace Mel…

      1. [sudden mental image of Mel later finding out that Verengt hired Mels kids to work on Dirtball]

    2. The specific pointing gesture is so cool! Yeah I wonder how universal it is too.

      1. It kind of looks like it’s less of a “that’s me” gesture and more of a formal gesture like a wave or wai or bow. Cool!

Stars, I bet Jay has PAGES of Centaur culture worldbuilding sitting around unorganized… Didn’t they create the Centaur species long before they created Talita, the character?

        1. oh dude go rummaging through the tumblr, there’s YEARS of stuff in there

    3. Unlike Mel, the matriarch is actually doing their job. A great relief for us and Talita.

      1. I hope the Matriarch says something to Mel about how they should have prepared Talita for introductions. Granted given their issues with listening, Mel will probably brush it it off and credit introductions going (mostly) smoothly to their personal judgments being right as opposed to the Matriarch salvaging their blunder.

        1. Since I feel bluntly acknowledging a problem is better than indefinite awkwardness and inefficiency from dancing around it forever, I feel that ideally, Talita would bite the bullet and just straight-up preemptively apologize to Verengt for being unfamiliar with body language and propriety of normal Centaur interactions, given her relative isolation from her own kind. And maybe even ask Verengt if she would be willing to let someone from their clan give Talita pointers and information on, well, how to just generally be polite if nothing else.

But I also feel that with Talita’s anxiety and such, things probably won’t happen that easily. I’m aware from personal experience that realizing something makes sense is much, much easier than actually being the one who has to do it.

  67. “bring any concerns you have with the arrangement to me”

    yeah about that…

  68. Accursed Dirt Boar

ok things are going well, maybe a bit too well…

  69. Wait- There’s no way this goes /well/… I can tell everyone’s going to be panicking about what’s going to end up going wrong

  70. Ohhh! So many great details on this page.

  71. wOOAH meeting the entourage. they’re so cool. and i’m glad they have experience with recycling specifically,,, perhaps a small win, all things considered
