Ranni hangs up and the call ends. Talita and Idrisah stare nervously at Cheevwut, who has been standing between them listening to the whole conversation.
Cheevwut: Well, That was clearly a bunch of hasty lies.
They turn and walk out of the cubicle.
Cheevwut: Good thing it’s also none of my funny business. Bye!
Talita and Idrisah look at each other, slump back on the cubicle desk, and sigh in relief.

cheevwut is such an entertaining character in this cast, they are the epitome of not caring about anything above their paygrade. this whole “runaway to the stars” operation could go so badly if they cared enough about anybody else’s business to report them acting so suspicious but its none of their funny business!

I get the idea the company has fostered this, and employees who care more about this sort of thing are more likely to move on, while employees who are less caring sort of wash up here, as the pay isn’t terrible, and the freedom is nice. Like working at any other remote area with poor management staff and no one checking in too often. I also suspect that there’s a lot of small harmless schemes going on in the backgrounds: Quiet home distilleries, a small grow operation, a quiet poker ring. Stuff that is edge-case not allowed, stuff that is someone elses funny business, and thus not (quite) noticed by anyone else.

It’s sort of worked with and against their favour at the same time here: On one hand, Talita can say what she likes to the people running the lifter, none of their funny business. On the other hand, Cheev knew about the other centaurs, and also did nothing and told no one about that either. Sigh.

I really don’t have a good handle on what kind of person Cheevwut is at heart. They seem casually friendly but they also seem to like really like drama. Do they like it enough to drop Talita and co. in hot water with the bosses if it means they can watch?
It’s not too late to trap Cheevwut under an upturned laundry basket with a breeze block stacked on it. Just in case.

I’m pretty sure most everyone kinda wants off this rock, interfearing with someone else’s escape attemtps sounds like a great way to rock the proverbial boat and make enemies that by nature of being stopped from leaving are gonna be problem.
Drama is best enjoyed from a safe distance and there’s no safer distance than a diffrent gravity well.

hmhm… i wonder if this also means that ranni saw through their lies, but let them off the hook because the pair (+gillie) have proven to be trustworthy in the past? i’m not too convinced of that, though. for one, ranni didn’t watch them freeze before picking up the call the way cheev did. two, the grandmas don’t strike me as the lenient type when it comes to their job and tbh, i prefer them that way.

I think the real payoff, for Cheev, is seeing Ohwitiil’s reaction when the results of “whatever those two are planning” crosses Ohwitiil’s desk. Because witnessing this “bunch of hasty lies” will allow Cheev to be a fly on the wall when *that* happens, as well…
Who knows, maybe Cheev “just happened” to be helping Idrisah pack, at that moment, because secretly, they were expecting Ranni to call Idrisah…
