Runaway to the Stars: Page 242

I love when an avian is on a page because then I get to design a new stupid little bird outfit.

Transcript

Idrisah: (ASL) Can you start packing your computer desk while I'm out?

Gillie frowns.

Gillie: (ASL) We don’t leave till next week!

Idrisah: (ASL) It’s only five days!

Gillie: (ASL) I refuse to live out of boxes until I have to.

Idrisah: (ASL) You’ll regret that this weekend.

Gillie: (ASL) I will pack more NON-ESSENTIALS.

In the Ixion admin wing, Idrisah packs up her cubicle space with help from Cheevwut. Talita leans on the edge of the cubicle wall, looking glum.

Talita: Need any help over here?

Idrisah: Thanks Talita, I think we’re good.

Talita: I’m gonna miss coming to admin to bug you.

  1. I always love how this comic, in spite of being set in space with a large portion of the cast being non-human, they still manage to make the atmosphere of so many of the scenes feel like everyday places and situations you’d have in real life.

  2. JAY. I’ve decided to make centaur silk knot soup replica Jay. I’ve rolled spaghetti squash and powdered parmesan into balls and I’m going to bake them Jay. I’m going to bake it until the Parmesan browns from the heat so it’ll keep its shape in soup, Jay. I’m gonna put my spaghetti squash Parmesan balls in chicken soup as a way to replicate centaur silk cheese knot soup Jay

PLEASE keep us updated on this! That sounds so cool and also so yummy

      1. SO I finished the replica silk cheese knot soup.

        Pros:
Pretty tasty, the flavors of Parmesan, Spaghetti Squash, chicken soup and various spices go well together. The texture is also pretty good, but that depends how much you like spaghetti squash.

        Cons:
Not an authentic silk cheese knot soup experience. The replica silk cheese knots immediately began falling apart once in the soup, and weren’t even that hardened out of the oven. I’d recommend trying this again but with flattening the knots into disc shapes so they’ll crisp more evenly in the oven.

I love when an Avian is on page because then I get to see a new stupid little bird outfit!!

I ADORE the stupid little bird outfits. I’m curious about the bird outfits that other avian species have. In the avian culture worldbuilding page you specifically said that skimmers dress conservatively, which makes me wonder how much cultural clothing practices from groups of other species of avian differ from skimmers’, and how much they’ve persisted in those communities despite (presumably heavy) Tiiliitian or Wiariian influence?

I love the stupid little bird outfits.
Also Gillie looks SOOO cute here man. Idk how to describe it. She’s just pretty!

  6. Talita in that last panel is ever so cute

  7. Awww. Poor Talita.

Also, please do not wrap electrical/data cables around your hand or elbow or a block of wood etc. Becuase this bends the braided wires inside and will break them which may mean thw cable doesn’t work or you could get a short and then a fire with an electrical cable.

    1. hang on but they come packaged like that anyway. how else are you meant to put them away

      1. It’s just best to avoid doing it more than necessary, if you’re taking out and stowing, say, a headset cord, or microphone or guitar power cables, every single day, it’s better for the cord (though less practical) to help it coil itself in a wide loop, then put a twist tie or a velcro strip around it.

It’s the bending that happens, when you wrap the cord around something too small, that causes the soft copper or aluminum wires inside to fatigue and fail. Wire rope, and other bundles of wires, like to lie in annoyingly big circles.

      2. Use both hands to coil them carefully and then bind the coil with a zip-tie or velcro strap.

Like, pretend you’re holding a steering wheel with both hands. Grip with one hand while you move the other, and use that grip to keep the coils of cord together and you slowly spin it while the loose end feeds into the circle.

        1. Exactly. It’s gonna be a wider circle than you want, but at least it will be flat.

  8. Oh dear, I can already foresee the disagreements over what constitutes “non-essentials”…

  9. Gillie is kinda real A fellow “put-things-off-until-the-last-second”-er

    .little does she know

    1. I mean, no matter what happens as long as Idrisah leaves Dirtball Talita won’t be bugging her in admin anymore.

  11. I’m surprised to see that those vertical blinds still exist in the future!

  12. “We don’t leave till next week!” “It’s only five days!” The two approaches to packing, perfectly encapsulated in two sentences.

(I’m on Gillie’s side. If you can’t toss it in a box the night before you leave, did you really need it anyway?)

Also, the little bird outfits continue to be some of my favorite parts of the series. Looking great as always, Cheevwut!

    1. Yeah, I wish we could see the bird outfits in color. And Idrisah’s, there’s gotta be some chic color coordination going on there.

And it infuriates me when I pack something, then find I need it later that night.

      1. Chevvut is a dun, so those bird clothes are 85% brown and gray.

    2. Yeah, the Avians sorta look like they try to dress themselves as very ruchy curtains, especially the brights. Gives mid-to-late 19th century vibes, or maybe Rococo. Only with wayyyy flimsier fabrics, for weight reasons. I’m just waiting for someone to show up with an honest-to-goodness bustle.

  13. gosh I love every chance we get to see more of Talita. She’s our primary protagonist and I still can’t get enough of her <3
also is there a particular inspiration being drawn from for avian attire?
