A person's capacity to inflict violence isn't determined by fangs and muscles. It's determined by their ability to depersonalize others.

Adam: Ugh, ok! Since you grabbed me, I thought you'd be fine with it!
He waves a hand dismissively and walks off, flanked by Phoebe and Dominic. Yao follows after them at a distance, looking back at Talita uncertainly. Phoebe and Dominic whisper to Adam, still unaware Talita can hear them.
Phoebe: You trying to get fired?
Dominic: Screw that– are you trying to get gored??
Adam: Whatever. We’re getting “fired” soon either way. It’s not like it’s gonna use those things, anyways.
Talita tenses at his words with an electric shock of fury, gripping her face and clenching her jaw as if she could curl inwards until she imploded. Then the temps are gone. She slumps down to the floor of the changing area. The massive vehicle bay room is empty.

Ooooh god, that’s how I would feel if someone grabbed my prosthetic without asking and made fun of it, that’s so violating, Adam should legally have to buy her 30 centaur foods
Dada
Yes, Adam. Because someone taking you off an old ass ladder so you don’t become a workplace accident is totally the same as pulling on a literally extension of someone body.
Dick.
tankwraith
we gotta kill this guy
WoomySans
I’m pretty sure that if Adam (hypothetically) did the same thing to one of the future centaur temps, they’d all rain down hell onto him for messing with one of their own. And it’d be made so much worse if it was done to their matriarch (essentially the leader of a centaur family).
greenbeanmachine
we gotta kill him with rocks

TALITA NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Mallow
Also folks in the comments being like we need bip or gillie to come kill this guy. Nah yall, we need IDRISAH! That gal will end this guys whole career with the righteous power of bureaucratic justice! And if that fails i could see this being the thing that drives her and gillie to quit in solidarity. But mostly i just hope someone offers talita a hug
Mallow
🙁 man this page is so sad. I feel like yao was genuinely trying to connect with talita over something xey thought they had in common albeit a bit tactlessly. But xey recognized them as antlers rather than tusks and was curious about what it was like. It just makes me sad that adam ruined the closest thing shes had to a positive interaction with the temps. Poor Talita 🙁
SheTheTDE
oooh I do not like this guy or his friends. Are centaurs just beasts to them? Human centrists should all be blown out an airlock sans helmet. It’s just racism but they think it’s ok because the person they’re being racist against is actually different as opoed to just a darker brown human and such selfish mindsets are why the earth is dead.

May your bread always go stale and your shoelaces always untie Adam.
(And wow great work Jay I am having EMOTIONS over the last three pages)
JoB
Frankly, I’d be happier about some sort of (semi)permanent mark to warn others …
… say, is there such a thing as a UV-only sharpie, to scribble “BULLY” onto his forehead in his sleep?

ADAM. AUUUUUUUUUGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Expecting Mel to do NOTHING
DeerGod
Talita…you deserve better coworkers than this…I hope since Mel is her manager they will be able to fix this, but the reader questions say they werent all to helpful in college. Hopefully this time might be different, since Adam grabbed her in such a harsh way?
asmolfirefly
but that’s the thing, is that she DID grab him too, and you KNOW if she tries to get him in trouble for this he’s gonna use that against her…
Darth Biomech
Adam deserves a harassment lawsuit. And 1 (one) punch to the face.
hsw
wow Adam, how dim are the gaslights in your house?
Moklebutt
Oh;.; the static effect around Talita in the last panel, is that her infrasonic groaning?
Flori
I think we’d get text of the sound of her groaning if she was. I think it’s because she’s shaking, which is equally as awful 🙁
PostMortem
I believe it’s simply to provide contrast against the background. I haven’t seen shaking or groaning rendered this way prior among Jay’s art – they seem to prefer using small lines surrounding the character’s outline for shaking and lines along the walls and floor for infrasonic groaning.
Mountaincide
UUUGH HE’S SUCH A PRIIIIICK >:C
Duke 1337-o
Welp. Time for somebody to have an airlock accident. Heinlein’s ghost demands it.

To me what hurt the most was Yao being a bystander… I understand xe felt bad about the situation and was empathetic to Talita, but I really really wish xe would say… I don’t know, something:(
SOLARIS
ohhh i hate him
JeanMaster12
If bro don’t get fired for being an idiot, hopefully he gets fired for assault cus that’s what that was 😦
gñfs
getting fired? nah son, hate crime lawsuit.
Gar G
Dang, that’s harsh…

I hate how many people were right about Adam using the “WELL YOU GRABBED MEEEEEE” excuse in the comments of the previous page AUGH
the fact you are able to perfectly capture such viscerally real and uncomfortable moments is both a blessing and a curse (in a good way lol)
TeacupAngel
Goodness, I was already anxious clicking on this page knowing exactly what Adam was going to do, but it still cut so deep and then he not only twisted the knife, everyone else revealed they have just as dehumanizing views of Talita and they are just more quiet about it… This is a personal nightmare for a lot of us here and seeing it portrayed so well to someone we came to know and love, gosh I had to stand up and take a walk. It’s probably the hardest hitting moment I’ve ever seen in a webcomic.
I guess we’ll see where the story goes from here. If it keeps to being so very real then Adam is probably getting off without even a slap of the wrist, as abusers like him often do. But I still really hope that Bip or Gilie learn of this and find a way to make his socks forever wet and all his nights interrupted by charley horse. You know, some proper “may you step on a lego every day of your life” kind of curse.
SnakeHouser
I genuinely feel that’s the most humane and appropriate punishment for his actions, not too violent yet so uncomfortable and deliberate.
I don’t know why but the comment about being grabbed threw me off since as dehumanizing as it is to be treated like an animal it was for his own safety and to have everyone else react to her as a crazy predator definitely hit me in the feels.
If the goal was to make you acknowledge workplace discrimination jay nailed it on the head. Good page.
Little Starfarer
And I do suspect he knows that it’s not equivalent. He’s just throwing that out there, with zero context, and he knows that with zero context it sounds like Talita started it – when she only ever touched him because he was potentially going to wind up dead.
Happens all the time.
KSClaw
God poor Talita. I know threatening bodily harm on a fictional character is useless, but FUCK you Adam and the ship you rode in on.
Lezzlebit
I think what hurts most to see is just how defeated Talita looks… In a lot of other situations someone might stand up for themselves and really acknowledge how bad everything in this situation is… I’m sure she knows she’s being treated wrongly but she just looks so hurt here. And with the way Mel deals with stuff I’m not sure Talita feels like anyone can actually help her with this situation.
Ticanaru
No one understands her, she is so incredibly alone. It’s not easy to stand up for yourself when you know you’d be the only one in your corner.
I’ve been following the lore of this for quite some time and I really didnt think this was where the plot would go. Poor girl.
snapz
ohh the othering “it” makes me so damn mad. really hope he gets to face the consequences sooner or later. hopefully sooner
creatureofthelaboratory
my heart aches for talita rn, i want to give her a hug 🙁

this was a really difficult one. Really well written but ouch

Having a hard time articulating just how much I appreciate this webcomic. Thank you so much for sharing it, Jay, I look forward to it updating all the time.
Ara
Ouch on so many levels. I’ve been in a workplace where I wasn’t respected and felt like a problematic annoying thing instead of a person with feelings. It hurts so much and leaves you feeling shattered.
Talita girl, I love you so much. I’d give you the biggest hug in the world if I could.
Solidago
I wonder if the avians deal with this level of depersonalization from humans who aren’t used to interacting with aliens? I imagine it’s not as bad, since there’s not literally only one avian on Dirtball, they’re bipedal which feels more familiar to humans, and they aren’t frighteningly large..
rustbird
One of the previous post-chapter Q&As mentioned that avians sometimes treat humans like dangerous predators, so it’s kind of a reversal! I imagine human-on-avian bigotry might be more like treating them like a pet, or doing things like casually picking them up to move them.
zaratustra
Jay did mention that avians in general hate being grabbed or even hugged.
glazeliights
another factor is that centaurs are the newest-discovered species and, since they havent had access to Cool Alien Technology for very long, theyre often stereotyped as “primitive/savage” by other species
holly...!
cannot remember the last time i felt this much visceral hatred for a fictional character
buam
My heart breaks for Talita, but I love the nuanced way you portray this interaction and what it says about the characters and the world at large. Talita was assaulted – but the techs’ focus is on Adam (“You trying to get fired?”) and not her (“Are you okay?”). Yao is the only one looking back to check on her, but Yao has even less power than Talita; she’s early in her career, harassed by Adam, and hasn’t displayed much confidence. She clearly feels bad for Talita, but can’t intervene the way Talita did for her. And it’s telling, too, that everyone knows Adam will go unpunished – the most he risks is getting fired. Talita knows it, too, which is why she just sits there when everyone else leaves – who is she even going to turn to for help, Mel? Mel may enjoy playing savior, but they act with pity and condescension, not understanding.

reminder Yao uses xe/xem/xers

Whoops, thanks for the reminder! Can’t edit the post unfortunately

A lot of other commenters here have honestly taken the words out of my mouth regarding this page. So instead I’ll leave this quote: “It’s not what you are that makes you a monster.”
Stray Cat
Actually, one additional thought: if the centaur temps theory turns out to be true, and they turn up before the human temps leave, and the two groups meet… that could potentially end very badly.
The Hollymonster
Or surprisingly well, if the centaur temps just duct tape Adam ten feet up a wall and call him a tiny baby man the moment he starts something.
Chase Wanderstar
Jay please let this happen.
Stray Cat
A second additional thought, later: a friend gave me a new addition to Adam’s growing list of titles: “Walking PR Disaster”.
SuriXiruS
I honestly hate Adam right now, but in a way he’s a really well written character.
He either just doesn’t give a damn what happens or knows exactly how far he can push it
He’s a bad person but I admire how he’s written
May
I can kind of imagine Yao and Talita being friends if the other interns weren’t there, (or were better behaved). The antler question might have been awkward, but it didn’t feel malicious, and it might have been smoothed over if Adam didn’t turn it into an excuse to assault the manager. The issue is that Yao and Talita are both shy and conflict adverse, and the only times they are in the same room there are others there as well.
MyUniverseinaBox
Adam might be the most obviously bad (I mean now he’s literally physically assaulted Talita), but all the other temps, and I mean all, are also awful.
Dominic constantly talking about Talita’s body as dangerous as if she’s an impulsive animal, Yao asking insensitive and invasive questions (and this is also the first time we see xem even try to talk to Talita), Phoebe finding Adam’s discrimination towards Talita bold at best and funny at worst, and Clayton treated Talita as a boss at the very least but otherwise seemed indifferent to everything- and all of them constantly misgender her. Now with Adam going a step further and referring to Talita as an ‘it’. Sickening.
They each show a different way Talita is often depersonalised. They suck!!!!
MyUniverseinaBox
As always, I love your writing Jay. Gawddd. This is gut wrenching.
glazeliights
adam has actually referred to talita as it before! this is unfortunately not new behaviour for him (“what, dont tell me that stripy sock puppet scares you just because it eats meat!”)
MyUniverseinaBox
Oh my gosh, yeah you’re right… yeesh.
Senaru
Yao’s only ‘crime’ is being autistic, xe may not have asked an appropriate question, but as an autistic person myself, I could easily see myself making the same tactical error with a purely curiosity driven question. I also read it as a little concerned for if Talita felt pain while going through the antler process. Xe can’t exactly ask a deer how it feels, and the mix of curiosity and subtle concern there is notable. I don’t think Yao actually did anything wrong. Xeir (?I’m not actually sure if that’s the right term, Xe/Xer is a newer pronoun word for me so apologies) question was merely technically inappropriate, but Xe is also visibly shy, and Talita also once protected Yao FROM Adam in an incident which involved those removable antlers Xe have. Xe is likely trying to be friendly while using a familiar topic between the two, and overstepped a little on accident. Not a terrible person, just autistic, unless I’m totally wrong in my reading of Xeir behavior as being similar to my own often over-questioning autistic self
izimb
I wish Yao would have stayed tho after seeing that, even if awkwardly – I mean, even in extremely awkward moments, if there is someone in pain, even if you don’t understand it, you can try to help (which I’ve also done, as awkwardly/or non-helpful as that may have been, with the classic “try to empathize with related anecdotes” or trying to mirror the experience somehow to show one cares).
MyUniverseinaBox
While I’d definitely give Yao more breathing room in some sense, autism isn’t an excuse to do bigotry. What xey did isn’t malicious, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t depersonalise Talita. Blaming Yao’s racist (species…ist?) questions on her autism feels like people are taking away xer agency in all this.
The reason I also say racist is that it kind of reminds me when white people fixate on certain hair-styles that black people may have. People often think of racism only being when you’re hateful of other cultures or people, but it also includes constantly pointing it out for no reason or even complimenting it. It’s exoticism, basically.
(also no worries, I’m new to the xem/xer pronouns as well)
Mister Muse
i don’t think most people are so much Blaming xer autism for it or saying it’s okay to say things like this just because xey’re autistic, but just that autism definitely contributes to the Proclivity for Inappropriate but Well-Intentioned Questions.
like, an autistic person could totally ask “so does black hair just stay where you put it? like cabbage patch kids’ hair?” and mean absolutely nothing malicious by it. it’s a direct, efficient request for information that they’re lacking, directly from a reliable source of said information. it’s just not appropriate for about a dozen reasons- especially when sprung on, effectively, a stranger. at work.
it’s still obviously on that person to learn some degree of how they should conduct themselves socially, or at the Very Least learn to change their approach and give people some warning before the impending trainwreck of the question they don’t know how to phrase better.
evileeyore
Talita was perfectly happy to answer Yao’s question, if Talita had a problem witht he question thay could have signaled that, they didn’t. She did signal she had a prblem with being grabbed, at which point the specieism and othering by Adam, Dominic, and Phoebe was reinforced.
I wish Yao had more gumption to stick around and offer an apology for the species, Talita could use a friendly human right about now and Yao, despite their social reluctance, is the clsoest thing she’s got in the vicinity.
J
I’m calling it, bigotry of some flavour is coming off Adam, just for the way he targets non-typical features. F*ck him
The Hollymonster
He’s literally being bigoted to Talita already???
Kitty
Adam’s horrific behavior is self evident, but my god, Dominic also needs to get a grip. At least with Dominic I can find some comfort in the fact that he’ll probably never achieve his dreams, mostly due to his own terrible attitude.
Kitty
I meant to say Adam will never achieve his dreams… Damn it.
Vinemaple
Oh, thank Zod indeed, EvilEeyore was right, Adam has no master plan, he’s just living in the moment, randomly doing Adam things! Also notice that, while Dom and Phoebe aren’t sticking up for Talita, they’re starting to realize Adam is seriously acting out, but Adam thinks they’re admiring his bravery and “dominance” over Talita!
I’ve been thinking how I would handle Adam if I was his manager… not how I would discipline him, but how I would prevent him from doing any of the crap he’s done. I think I’d try to keep him from getting bored if at all possible, find a way to let him think his “ability” is recognized, and trick him into thinking that getting evaluated for ADHD was his own idea.
The Sophont Rights violations would be harder to fix, but I’m thinking an intervention after the first one, with the regulation discipline, figure out an education plan, and maybe try teaming him up with Phoebe, who’s visually enough to set him off, but counts as a typ human, and seems able to set good boundaries with him. He needs to learn that *individual* people who aren’t like him are just people, and unfortunately he’s not going to be on Dirtball long enough to challenge any of his assumptions about his non-typ-human coworkers. So if he was my temp, not much of that would be possible. I’d probably end up having to continue escalating the regulation responses to workplace harassment until I’d have to fire him, unless a warning or low-level discipline actually worked on him.
Silyon
As former middle-management myself, I’ve been wondering how I’d deal with him as well. Short answer, I wouldn’t, his butt would be fired and on the next shuttle off-world long before it got to this point. Simply for the routine verbal abuse alone. People like him need to be shown that they are not special snowflakes and will have the hammer come down for that kind of behavior early on, else they will keep escalating and creating a hostile environment simply because they think they’re invincible and can get away with it. Worse, them getting away with it will demonstrate to other workers that they can get away with it as well, dragging the entire team down. The failure to establish professional conduct on Talita’s part directly led to this assault, unfortunately. As a boss you cannot be conflict-adverse, because you need to be able to set the standards for what is and is not acceptable, and then hold your workers to those standards.
As it’s gotten to this point, Adam’s gone. End of story, fired on the spot and sent straight home with no pay if he tries to show up for work. If it’s a contracted gig, which would be odd for temp work, then we’d be going over that contract with a fine-toothed comb and making note of each of the doubtless hundreds of ways he’s breached it in his time there. Breach of contract would generally mean he gets no payout or even fined, not to mention the negative reference making such employment more difficult for him moving forward and possible criminal charges if the breaches are severe enough. There’s quite a lot of ways to make him pay for this, and not a single one of them would be unwarranted at this point. Unfortunately, it seems unlikely Talita’s going to pursue any of them, and if she doesn’t she simply ends up proving Adam’s claim that she’s a doormat he can walk all over. I hope she proves me wrong.
JoB
> If it’s a contracted gig …
When (and if …) management learns of what has already happened so far, their first and foremost priority ought to be to get Adam out of wherever he can put (himself and) others into harm’s way. Getting the contractual stuff, or other red tape, dealt with is secondary.
Alas, as much as I’d like to hand Adam the shovel myself, I don’t think that the Dirtball smelt has a coal bunker. Or that there are lots of pencils in need of sharpening, assuming that Adam will not turn that into a hazardous occupation …
> Unfortunately, it seems unlikely Talita’s going to pursue any of them
I can think of four broad categories Talitas reaction can fall into (one being “4. run away from it all” that we know the plot is eventually heading towards), and she’s not going to like any of them. In and of itself, that makes “3. inaction” the likeliest, but it’s also the one a fifth¹ person – from (Yao? to) other long-term Dirtballers to a certain grey emAInence – could easiest make a difference in, so.
¹ By which I mean someone who’s not only not Talita, Adam, or one of the other temps egging him on, but also not “management”, either by position or by stance / chosen course of action.
Enai
Yes, if by pure ✨magical happenstance✨ video of the “chucking space debris at Dom” episode and the “climbing the ladder definitely not rated for humans” nonsense and maybe even this bullying incident were dropped into the appropriate person’s inbox, that might help. It would probably also get Talita reprimanded for not reacting correctly, but Adam would be on the next transport towards Sol, no question. At least the first two had vehiclesbwith camera present and I think Bip’s always listening to the comms, so…
Of course, Talita would be very mad at Bip for meddling, so I very much doubt they will do so. Or maybe she’d be glad, who knows?
