Runaway to the Stars: Page 201

No one can stay on Dirtball forever.

Transcript

Gillie crouches down next to Idrisah, concerned.

Gillie: (ASL) You ok?

Idrisah looks up at Gillie, tears welling in her eyes and hand over her mouth. She curls into Gillie’s shoulder and sobs. Gillie takes her in her arms and consoles her, then hesitantly broaches the subject she knows is on Idrisah's mind.

Gillie: (ASL) I know you like how living here lets you work with more Tiiliitians in person… But we knew when we came here that it couldn't be forever. Maybe it's time to move back to Nexus Jovia, and look for something new.

Idrisah: (ASL) Yeah…

Talita, who was peeking over her shoulder at the conversation, feels her heart quietly sink.

  1. I absolutely love how this story effortlessly intertwines personal stories into the world, everything just feels so real and grounded, it has real impact.

  2. I’m already imagining worse case scenarios. As someone who has had to deal with social anxiety knowing that your friends will be leaving (even if it’s what’s best for them) is always terrifying.

But I’m wondering what if Gillie and Idrisah do end up leaving before the end of this story and it’s the sudden loneliness added with the sudden alienation of having a whole bunch of centaurs that she doesn’t fully grasp the social norms and culture of that finally pushes Talita away.

  3. That’s gut-wrenching.

I wonder what’s going through Talita’s mind. Maybe she’s realising that she also needs to move on from Dirtball.

    OAGH OAGH OAGH OAGH

  8. She misses her Mom and Dad. :C (Said as someone who really, really missed her family when she was living far away from them too.)

  9. Poor Idrisah. But also poor Talita. Just as she found new friends they too need to bail. I mean, sure, we know how it’s going to end, but the current situation is quite unpleasant.

  10. “Idrisah I think we should run away… to the stars.”

    1. …Say that again

    2. Light_In_The_Fog

it’d be convenient if they could team up with another Runaway…

  11. Ah, so that will be the motivation for Gillie and Idrisah to leave to take place into the Runaway journeys, be closer of the Idrisah family. It’s sad that the situation blew up like that, but I also understand that Idrisah was between the hammer and the anvil here.
For Talita, it hasn’t been shown yet, but it’s easy to bet that when she will sees the other Centaurs as Temp crew, she’ll slam the door violently on Mel’s face.

  12. ‘Hotel Dirtball’ doesn’t have the same kind of ring like ‘Hotel California.’

    1. You can add an expletive to fix the syllables and cadence!

      1. IncompleteMachine

        which expletive?

        1. 🎶 Welcome to the Hotel fucking Dirtball 🎶

Talita’s totally gonna feel like she’s being left alone on dirtball, huh? I wonder what Bip has to say about this. They TOTALLY eavesdropped on that convo too, right? I mean I would have.

    1. Waiting for Bip to interrupt at just the worst time

      1. Rejoice! I just found out that that old hydrogen plant holds a lot more ready-to-use fuel than we thought! Once the ship takes off, I’ll be through the wormhole and out of your hair in a jiffy and you can continue your peaceful, law-abiding, happy life here!”
(… no, I know absolutely nothing about any potential reasons of yours not to, how would I? [hides binoculars behind back])

    2. Wouldn’t it be pretty dark if this call was actually Bip trying to emotionally manipulate Idrisah to come with him to the Runaway?

      1. that’s unfair to Bip imo. they’re definitely a mischievous a little shit, but i don’t think they’d stoop to emotional manipulation to get what they want.

        1. professionals have STANDARDS

  14. OUUGHHHHHHHHHHH 🙁
