Gillie: (ASL) …And I don’t appreciate being made to feel that way by a friend.
She glares at Talita, who sweats guiltily.
Idrisah: Talita, you know we don’t mind helping you, right?
Talita: I know... but... this isn't a rational feeling. I'm not going to "know" myself out of it.
Idrisah makes a somber face.
Idrisah: Well, trust me– you’re not going to avoid your way out of it either. Being friends means being each other’s problems.
Talita: Yeah…
Gillie stares wide-eyed at her phone transcription and then bursts into laughter, making Talita flinch and Idrisah look over in confusion.
Gillie: (ASL) HAAHAHAHA! You two are so gloomy! Yeah we got a problem—one with a solution! That’s called a PUZZLE! Puzzles are FUN!

MAN i love gillie’s spirit so much. she has incredible patience and optimism that really take the wind out of talita and idrisah’s bummer fest. the positive spin she puts on the situation immediately gets me excited and reminds me why i love her so much. talita hurt her feelings, but gillie is NOT into moping!! its a great energy to rival the worrywarts over here

I realised a while back – this comic’s major themes, according to the About page, are communication, accommodation, and everyday life in co-species spaces. This whole scene embodies all three of those themes in one go. I’ll go into more detail once the scene’s over.

I understand completely what it feels like to feel like everyone’s problem.. And i also know these two different approaches to it- to get all self-conscious about it and collapse into yourself, lamenting how much of a problem you are and how everyone has to make paths and change things for you.. or to get frustrated at the world for making you feel this way, when you did not ask to be born with these things or to have these things, you are simply living your life and you wish you could live it without issue. Sometimes it’s both equally, sometimes it’s a mix of more of one than the other, sometimes it’s anywhere inbetween- but at the end of the day, when you are around others that also feel this way, you’ll have to realize that they’ll understand it more than anyone else!! And that together you could face the world with a smile despite it all.
Maybe this was all very obvious, but I still wanted to say it anyway. I love these characters and this story so much for so many reasons. As someone who relates a lot to both, I hope talita lets gillie help her, I hope gillie understands where talita’s coming from a little more. It seems like they will!!

God, I love the emphasis on the word “friend” in panel 1. The amount of force Gillie signs it with…! This couldn’t have come at a better time, when Talita was just having all those anxieties about whether they were really her friends or just coworkers

I’m starting to realize where my bias lies… Talita’s species dysmorphia, while a valid problem, and even her size and alien physique, don’t limit her in the way Gillie’s congenital inoperable deafness does. There’s a difference in the amount that their disabilities and uniquenesses affect their lives and their ability to function in a society with a clear baseline of normativity.
I’ve been seeing their problems as of equal magnitude, when in fact they’re not.

I don’t know if magnitude works outside of granular analysis, they simply have very different accommodation problems. Talita doesn’t need to worry about effectively communicating with Anglophones anywhere she goes, Gillie doesn’t need to worry about starving to death because a place she’s staying at has nothing edible to her species.

gillie is my favorite 🥰 thank you gillie for your direct communication, and your refusal to stop demanding respect and accomodation from friends, and refusing to enable bad behavior from friends.
i also appreciate that idrisah’s able to relate and get through to talita about her unmanaged anxiety. gillie’s probably called out her wife once or twice for avoidance behaviors, and then supported her through Doing The Hard Thing.

I mean, not to poo-poo Gillie’s feelings, but I doubt that it’s Talita’s intention to make her feel “inconvenient.”
