Gillie and Idrisah, who is leaning on the back of the couch, both look expectantly at Talita. Talita appears frozen, with her eyes wide and her mane feathers bristling.

It doesn’t matter that sign forces you to directly interact with aspects of yourself that you’re not comfortable with by needing to use a language that was physically not made for you and making you further focus on your body, something which you’re already uncomfortable with, at a time when your antlers growing in are going to make you even more uncomfortable for physical as well as psychological reasons, while your friend is being blissfully unaware that you’re suffering from dysphoria, which in turn makes you even more uncomfortable about the way you feel about yourself by adding guilt to the whole situation, that’s no excuse for being rude!

to be fair, it’s not like not learning how to sign isn’t for any small reason. remember, gillie relies totally on sign language, and every interaction we’re those two have interacted, it’s made very clear that gillie ends up getting left out in the conversation and has to play catch up with idrisah later. the voice app can only work so well; gillie has to look at her phone all the time to keep up with a conversation and if there’s any other sound at all it doesn’t work. I get talita is uncomfortable, but avoiding the issue isn’t going to help her body dysmorphia AND if talita intends to maintain a relationship with these two it would be INCREDIBLY unfair to expect gillie to keep mucking on and playing telephone for all the time they spend together for the next fifty years

Poor Talita! Her body language has always said she’s uncomfortable with that. Forcing her to do something uncomfortable is not good. Tricking her into doing something she clearly is uncomfortable doing is also a form of manipulation. When Talita is ready to do it on her own terms, she will but constantly confronting her is not good. 🙁

i don’t think it’s manipulation to teach someone how to communicate with you when you’re Deaf 😭 like obviously it’s a lot of stress to figure it out but it’s not manipulative lol. i figure she’s just been putting it off for a number of reasons and gillie’s finally got some way to hook her in

this may put a better spin on it: if Talita still doesn’t want to do it, she needs to articulate a real reason why (to her friend, who finds doing this important for their friendship) and not just make up a fake excuse and run away.

you know gillie doesn’t have a choice in whether she uses sign and nearly every time she uses the voice text app at best she’s behind in the conversation constantly looking at her phone or it completely craps out on her and she needs to play catch up with idrisah after everything is said and done? do you really expect gillie to have to live like that every time she has a social outing since talita is the only* friend they have on dirtball? I absolutely understand talita’s anxieties but A: avoiding her issues won’t fix anything and B: some things are more important than your own feelings. what happens in an emergency and talita is the only one around gillie?
