Idrisah picks up her bowl and chopsticks and gives Bip a death glare. Gillie looks unamused. Talita scratches her face, grimaces, and looks away awkwardly. Bip's avatar shrugs dramatically.
Bip: Geeze, alright. I can read a room. I'll go use my processing power elsewhere.
Bip leaves the call.

Gillie picks up her phone and looks at Talita, clearly thinking about something.

I dunno why it didn’t strike me before but Idrisah isn’t wearing her headscarf around Bip. Is that due to Bip being nonbinary/agender and so it’s strictly men/masculine genders that her head covering applies to? Or is it more that they’ve all gotten comfortable around Bip and so they get certain privileges that a non-woman/non-feminine gender stranger usually doesn’t? Although it makes me giggle to imagine that Idrisah has asked Bip to apply a headscarf/hair-hiding filter to their cameras, so a small portion of Bip’s processing is doing that whenever looking at Idrisah.

I get the impression she’s casual about the head covering and probably only consistently wears it to work because it’s culturally legible to the Avians she’s translating for, who seem to like very covery clothes

I’m imagining that there would be a lot of debate in-universe as to whether rules on head covering apply to being around aliens

My guess would be that she just takes it off at home and doesn’t worry about genders. As an agnostic Muslim, I feel like Idrisah enjoys the comfort of familiar ritual but doesn’t get wrapped around the axle about it or let it affect how she treats people.

Idrisah mostly wears the headscarf in public or around men she isn’t family with. Bip is not a man, which excludes them from the most literal interpretation of the what the Quran says about a veil between women and men. Not that Idrisah is as much of rule-follower as she postures at being…

I wonder if something will happen that will convince our three ladies to leave. My prediction is that Talita will want to get out of Dirtball if centaurs end up being hired. Dunno about either Idrisah or Gillie, though I assume they’re a package deal.

I agree that that’s the most likely trigger to send her running offworld, but there are … other possibilities. She’s been shown evading a boatload of other kinds of situations as well …

I low-key wouldn’t be surprised if Talita gets back on the treadmill, this chapter, and decides after a full sprint that she’ll ride with Bip.
I’m far more certain that, however Talita ends up on the Runaway, the Touati-Sharpes will refuse to let her go alone.

I think Gillie and Idrisah are a bit fed up with Dirtball, so the idea of leaving must already be floating around in their heads. A vague idea, not to the point of leaving with Bip and all the potential problems, but certainly going off in their own way soon after the Bip departure.
Seeing Talita slam the door after Mel’s shenanigans could be an electro-shock for Gillie and Idrisah, but mostly I think it will be motivated by the sympathy of not letting Talita go off alone. And then, when they get to the first stop, why not continue the adventure a little longer?
