Runaway to the Stars: Page 257

Hi Verengt! Useless lore but their face injury came from getting stomped by a multi-ton livestock animal when they were a kid.

Transcript

The largest adult centaur with the massive scar on their face walks up to Talita, lower lip down and trunk curled upwards. They are slightly shorter than Talita, with a stocky build, longer body feathers, and no visibly defined muscles like Talita's.

Scarred centaur: You with the wide eyes. You are named Talita?

Talita flinches back, grimacing in alarm with her mane feathers standing on end. The other centaur pauses, lowering their trunk, tightening their lips, and turning their head to look at Talita with their remaining eye.

Scarred centaur: …Sorry, did I approach too quickly?

Talita grabs her face as if to close her jaw.

Talita: N–no, you’re fine! I–uh–didn't expect to be meeting you all so soon. …What were your names…?

Verengt: We are the Gwailer clan. I am Verengt, the matriarch.

Verengt points at their face with two extended center fingers. Their trunk is curled up, nostrils flared, and their eyes half-lidded.

  1. Not me projecting my anxiety to Talita’s situation here and wanting to immediately spill “Hi I was raised by aliens so if I’m out of line in any way it’s because I literally didn’t know I was” XD

  2. is verengt nursing ? It looks like theyre wearing one of those maternity cloaks and there’s lil lumps under it !!

  3. You there! Bug-eyed one! Hello!

  4. Speaking as an autistic, it’s very helpful that they’ve been briefed. She’s a fish out of water, as are they.

  5. The Opossum Witch

God I love that in panel 2 that seems like a friendly expression but I know they are actually startled/cautious and that in panels 1 and 5 they have the equivalent of a polite smile but seem cooly stand-offish to me. UGH Jay you do such an amazing job making aliens that seem ALIEN

  6. oh goodness, i only just realized in the first panel Verengt isnt just giving a friendly trunk smile but the lip and nostril flare too, theyre delighted to meet Talita! and then Talita immediately scares them (thin pupil, slightly tensed lips) ToT 5 seconds in and already tragical miscommunication

  7. I just realise something, Talita’s face, while still clarly alien, is WAYYYY more stylized than the other centaurs!
Look at the emphatic lines on panel 3, or the sweat drop on panel 4; those are clearly elements put there to make her expressions readable at a glance (to us) and, by contrast, making all the alien characters feel alien TO US READERS.

THE GRAFIC IS PUTTING US IN TALITA’S WIEWPOINT THAT’S AMAZING

    1. I’m not sure how much it’s that she’s more stylized and how much is actual physical differences. She’s got several learned behaviors in how she emotes that explicitly imitate human faces, especially in how she holds her eyes/eyelids and her mouth. She’s also got lighter eyes, which look more cartoony.

      1. I was just thinking that. We have yet to see natural centaur gestures, body language, etc.

They’ll have a lot to learn from each other.

  8. Verengt’s colors are SO pretty, I love the dark stripes on the pale base

  9. interesting little detail i just noticed…. the new centaurs really seem to raise their trunk when speaking, where as talita tends to tuck hers quite often while speaking. i wonder if this is sort of like the human version of someone who mumbles all the time lol

    1. I think that Jay confirmed once that Talita talking “into her neck” is a bad nervous habit that equates to mumbling, yes, along with the way she grips her neck with her hand.

  10. From the perspective of a Homo Sapien, that scar looks straight up unsettling. Maybe because of my species biology, nothing that looks that way should still be alive and functioning.

The benefits of not having all your brain in your head.

    1. Right 🥹 there’s a part of me that wishes so hard that Talita could fit in with these centaurs and be able to find out about her own heritage. I just hope Mel being “helpful” and springing an entire clan of centaurs on Talita isn’t too traumatising for our poor girl…

    2. Oops sorry i meant to reply to Mango The Captain. But I also agree about the matriarch looking quite unsettling. Stunning character design.

    3. I’m new to this webcomic, and that makes sense. Their brain to body mass ratio vis-à-ours would def. be interesting to know.

  11. Mango The Captain

They’re being so polite (wide watery eyes emoji) (I don’t know how to add emojis)

    1. Mango The Captain

They can definitely tell that Talita is startled, even with different body language, that’s so cool!

    2. 🤔 my phone’s keyboard (fossify keyboard) app has an explicit emoji keyboard that works for that.
If it doesn’t, some smileys like colon: round bracket) are rendered as emojis 🙂 I don’t know which combination gives 🥺, though.

  12. fuuuck its a clan. its over

  13. I absolutely LOVE the expression in the 2nd panel omg

  14. Huh? Did Verengt just smiled at Talita the human way? That’s very thoughtful of them. I don’t know what Mel told them all about Talita, not much knowing them, but I can bet money that Verengt is a smart cookie. so far they seem polite and observant.

    1. You are seeing something that looks like a smile to your human brain and assuming it could have no other meaning to centaurs.

      1. I think Verengt is smiling in the first last panel. Relaxed, closed mouth and an upturned trunk iirc.

    2. They are grimacing in surprise/confusion at Talita’s terrified facial expression

  15. I forget often just how RIPPED Talita is. This must be quite the sight for the new centaurs, seeing this muscular lady who’s also a nervous wreck…

    1. It occurs to me that Talita’s antlers will also be a little weird, although a spacer clan would be used to other Centaurs being in different parts of their biorhythm.

  16. Wow I love how you can really see the muscle difference between them, the new centaurs look so soft and round compared to Talita. They got that layer of healthy fat she’s missing. It makes them look much cuter haha! Also lol at Talita starting at their trunk instead of the rest of their face, the exact thing she hates when humans do! Bet she’s gonna think about that when she overanalyzes this entire exchange during the night.

  17. How very soft and fluffy! Friendly momma! I want to hug the huge fluffy momma friend but might get squoze too hard if the Gwailer in general or Verengt in specific are unfamiliar with how gentle humans need to be hugged, also it would probably be rude to ask a very fluffy stranger for a hug anyway.

    1. I have an extremely fluffy dog who is literally bigger than I am (I am a normal human adult). You may ask to hug him; in fact you needn’t even ask, the answer is yes and he’s already barreling towards you.

  18. Oh what a beautiful trunk smile, they’re seem sweet. I wonder if the human-like smile is on purpose to help calm this centaur in human clothes? It works on actual humans, why not this weirdo? Could just be nothing though.

    1. Viashino_wizard

the human-like smile is actually a centaur grimace of concern if I’m remembering correctly.

  19. I love how they point differently than Talita would.

  20. I’m having a second-hand social anxiety

  21. YAY! SHE’S CHILL!! (As far as we can see🤞)
I haven’t seen the facial expressions explanation for Centaurs, but I can see that Verengt is making an effort to understand Talita and make the interaction easier for her. I REALLY HOPE that Mel briefed them about Talita, even if Mel didn’t brief Talita about them 😒
Then again Talita is Mel’s kid to some degree, they might not have been able to stop talking about her. Such is the pride of a parent!

    1. They really seem to be excited to meet her. I doubt Mel gave them much to work on except for “you’ll be working with a centaur :D” just based on everything else about them but maybe. Just maybe. We can hold out some hope.
In case you’re interested in my read, from what I understand of the chart (on Jay’s tumblr somewhere, though can’t find it rn) the panels can be broken down as:
1st Panel: Very excited/happy as they greet Talita.
2nd panel: Turning head to look at her with remaining eye, expression of mild shock/surprise at Talita’s reaction (her expression reads as mildly aggressive shock to me from a centaur’s POV).
4th panel: Neutral (all visible centaurs except Talita are).
5th panel: Friendly/elated, less intense than first panel but not just “happy” either

Over all they seem quite excited to be there and to interact with her so far.

    2. As nice as it would be for Mel to talk about Talita in a helpful manner from what we’ve seen of the character answers Mel saw themselves as more of a college sponsor then a parent and the Matriachs pause suggests she was not given enough notice from Mel on how to interact with Talita. Mel seems to think that Talita will just naturally know how to communicate with them through exposure so they might not think the clan needed any warning about the extent of Talitas lack of exposure to other Centaurs.

  22. Can I just say that I always really appreciate the page transcripts? They so often call my attention to details that I otherwise might have glossed over, and I love the additional layer of immersion they bring to the comic.

  23. I hope Verengt gets added to the Characters page at some point, I love them

  24. I love how you were able to make them look kind and gentle despite them missing half their face. Really shows that physical disfigurations doesn’t have to define you as a person, as is sadly far too often seen in fiction.

  25. i wonder how old verengt is. initially i assumed they were like 10+ years older than talita, but now i’m wondering if they’re actually around the same age. that might exacerbate talita’s insecurities around homeworld centaurs, interacting with one around the same point in life as her, but leading their own clan. meanwhile, she’s struggling to manage a group of temp workers

  26. Talita doing her best here!!! Hoping the friendly vibe keeps up aaaa ;A,

  27. I imagine Verengt sounding like the Khajiit women from Skyrim (voiced by Pam Cholet).

  28. Shes smiling at Talita how sweet 🙂

I don’t think Talita knows how freaked out she currently looks rn to them tho lolll

  29. MonstieMunchies

its so metal that you can see Verengts eye socket

    1. Ohhh, I assumed that was the contours of her nasal passages, but I can see the socket, now that you pointed it out! Wow!!

  30. I really hate Mel right now.

  31. I feel like I’m anxiously watching two pet cats that have just been introduced to each other lmao

  32. Human? Meet Centaur, Centaur? Meet human.

  33. Verengt seems so sweet so far I hope the clan stays nice 😭

  34. oooooooougouoguh oh man. this is so good. i hope this first meeting goes well

  35. I love the little trinket/pouch Verengt is sporting, with the six legs on it im assuming its based on a centaur homeworld creature, very cool detail

    1. the transcript on the page we first see them says it’s a chatelaine, which apparently was a decorative belt clip that held small tools and keys on chains, and was a symbol of the woman of the house’s wealth and authority over domestic matters
so even though that’s a human thing(? maybe it just organically arose from some centaur cultures too), the word choice tells us a lot about function and social role

  36. Okay the matriarch seems very sweet so far, thank god

  37. the matriarch is being so polite omggggggg i love them TT ^ TT)

  38. Okay, that’s good; she’s being cautious and considerate of Talita…

  39. Still in love with the centaurs’ expressions being inverted with humans’ at times, like how Verengt tempering themself looks far more like an intentional friendly smile than their actual intentional friendly smiles. And how Talita truly is visibly freaked out but additionally looks aggressive when she isn’t. And it’s not like there’s no similarities, both centaurs and humans have wide eyes for both intense aggression and fear, and the tightening of the mouth into a grimace can be the same, but the differences like resting lid position, and up- or downturned corners of the mouth, change everything. Two systems that are similar but sometimes incompatible. the mental gymnastics is so cool

  40. YAY the matriarch seems very kind! As expected of a leader-parent. Mel must have been explaining Talita’s background to the clan just now.

  41. Verengt is so mama. I love them

  42. I was really nervous for what was to come but Verengt has charmed me with the expression in the second panel. Verengt I like you lots PLEASE I hope nothing goes terribly wrong

  43. Oh hi Verengt, I’m Outtahere

  44. One of the differences between Talita and other centaurs’ mannerisms that I find cool and interesting is where they point their heads. Talita always seems to point her face ‘dish’ forward, whereas most of the time I see centaurs put their trunk forward. It could partly be that Talita’s used to talking to people a lot shorter than her, and so has to look down a lot, but I think her face also looks a bit more… human-ish when she points her dish forward? And she doesn’t point her trunk at people anyway.
I’m so happy to finally see Verengt speak!! I think it’s ironic how their ‘oh, was that too much’ face almost looks more friendly to a human, because of their mouth line and open eyelids, than their friendly neutral face. It’s cool to see some centaur hand gestures, too! I’m thinking the two middle fingers pointed up is for a greeting, and maybe something in there indicates their status, too..

  45. I notice that in the transcript, Jay describes Talita grabbing her face “as if to hold her jaw shut.”

To me that implies that Talita is thinking, “don’t open your mouth don’t open your mouth don’t open your mouth” as one of the few lessons she’s learned the hard way about talking to normative Centaurs…

Verengt looks fluffy I would beg to pet them

  46. milk4evertoasted

I don’t get the past theories of “They won’t respect her authority!!”, because Verengt *does* care. Our brains are reading centaur faces like >:-( all the time because they have half lids. They probably have half lids as an expression of calmness because wide eyes signal attention and aggression, probably even in their ancestors. Kind of like how baring teeth is aggressive, full attention is too.
I can see Verengt and their clan fully be sweethearts because Centaurs are very touchy-lovie and their clans are essentially just big families… it makes sense. Talita doesn’t need a clan to be respected within dirtball, although it would help with some internal assumptions!
Verengt is already being polite and kind!! They have a soft expression and do take into account that she might be jumpy or anxious or a little scared… fingers crossed anyways.

  47. God they seem nice but you know SOMETHING is gonna go wrong

  48. Im 10000% speculating based on vibes alone… but.. i have a horrible gut feeling that mel has essentially facilitated a horrific miscommunication (or worse, purposefully planned) where this clan thinks that Talita is meant to *join them* or something..
i could see it all in mels head… “i found you a whole CLAN talita! isnt that great? you just have to adapt to all their cultural habits and then you can live your centaur life with others of your species! fly free my beautiful dove!”
this, of course, would feel like mel has essentially abandoned her or didnt want her- something talita fears and has experienced with human friends before (her childhood friend, cal, and now Gillie and Idrisah.. and bip, all leaving her) while also doubling down on her species dysmorphia- she cant perform normal centaur body language, she doesnt know of this clans customs, ect.
Verengt may be under the assumption that this was a perk of the job, their clan seems pretty small from what we saw, so a new worker would be a boone for them while their pupa/larvae and older chileren are growing still. But from their POV Verengt may start to realize just how big of a “project” Talita is. even if they went in with the knowledge she was different- they may not be ready for just *how* different (whoch we sort of see here with simple greetings)

god i hope im wrong lol but i keep remebering this is the chapter we “see a centaur cry” : ‘)

    1. You know, this is actually a really, really good theory… especially given how outgoing and sensitive Verengt is being. I can see their understanding maybe being “this poor, poor thing has spent their life alone among Humans, a foundling, but Mel and the others have told us they’re sweet and kind and brilliant and hard-working, we shouldn’t let our preconceived notions about singletons get in the way of good sense and the needs of the clan.”

And meanwhile, I think you may have hit the nail on the head with your theory of Mel’s inner monologue.

Also, a marriage proposal from Verengt would DEFINITELY cut through Talita’s guilt and conditioning, regarding Mel and her duty to others. The way I read Talita, it would FLIP her avoidant behavior from “just ignore the problem and maybe it will go away,” to “I need to be. Somewhere Else. Now.”

Maybe to the point where she texts Bip, “Take me with you. I can be there by 15:00.”

      1. Oh god. You may be right – Mel strikes me as exactly the kind of person who sort of treats people like complicated things that are happiest / best served when you put them in their right places on an imaginary shelf – an approach that can work somewhat well when “put in the right place” means “have the electronics nerd become an engineer in their specialty” or “give the language nerd plenty of books”, but works much less well when it’s “Hey, you’re Deaf / a centaur / a member of $involuntary_group! I found another member of $involuntary_group who has nothing in common with you, now you shall meet and move in with each other and become the bestest of friends! ^_^”

    2. This is horribly plausible and entirely in character for Mel. They may very well have been talking this up as a great idea to Verengt, thinking how wonderful this would be for Talita to get to finally join a clan of her own people.

    3. think about this, Mel arranged a marriage for their employee, and the clan agreed to marry in a random stranger whos supposed to be their boss, no mind for their own marriage customs, no mind for them knowing Talita is at the very least from a different background, only on the basis of Talita being the same species as them?

    4. This is depressingly plausible since Mel apparently thinks all Centaurs are birds of a feather.

    5. Yeah that’s the big impression I’m getting, though I wasn’t looking at it from a “wed-in” angle so much as I can see Mel accidentally leading Verengt to believe that Talita was aware, ready, and willing for any / all of this and it wasn’t in fact explicitly a surprise for her on Mel’s part (and possibly later getting pissed at Mel about being treated as such).

Like it’s super rude if you consider from Verengt’s position that this person (potentially) hyped up this centaur who also struggles with communication and is totally stoked to join the clan and integrate with centaur society, and totally has been given the rundown and then you show up and it turns out that hey, this is news to the centaur in question and they leave (possibly to wed into a different clan outside of your own) and then you find out you possibly only got hired specifically to dump this centaur on your clan (and said centaur left of their own volition). I could See Verengt either laying into them or lodging a complaint with higher ups and this finally being the one thing that gets Mel to really Listen.

    6. Oh gods, I think you’re right.

And on top of that, because Talita’s expressions are going to be more human than centaur, Verengt will be primed to re-interpret a lot, which would definitely lead to leaning on externally given information. Oh noo…..

  49. hey wait. is talita AWARE that she’s more or less unreadable to other centaurs? if she wasn’t before, i imagine she’s learning it quite quickly just by being reciprocally confused by the new temps’ expressions or “lack thereof”, but what an unpleasant surprise it would be to find yet another barrier to connection with people from your birth culture

    1. I would assume she’s at least got an idea of how different she acts; she’s met other centaurs before, from what I recall, so she might already have experience. And even if she hadn’t, I’d think it wouldn’t be hard for her to take her knowledge of other sophonts and their behavioral differences (or even the behavioral differences between living creatures in general, like how baring your teeth at some primates is a display of aggression) and extrapolate from That that centaurs would be the same way, even if she had no way of knowing the Specific differences. Or that’s probably how I would approach the situation anyway LOL

      1. * by “the same way”, I meant “would also express emotions differently/have different body language” if that wasn’t clear. This is what I get for not proofreading oops

      2. i know she’s met centaurs before but the only concrete encounter i remember was when she was a kid and probably wasn’t thinking too critically about it. as for her learning in other ways, i think i remember that she kind of avoids centaur content? bc everyone expects her to Be More Centaur and she resents it? something like that? which would be an obstacle in learning abt it. but i’m also realizing i can’t recall where i got that from so there’s a good chance i made it up in my head

  50. Aw, Verengt looks like she is so sweet. I hope Talita warms up to her.

  51. Beside unfortunate Talita character arc circumstances, Verengt looks very pretty I just wanted to say it

  52. Light_In_The_Fog

Loving the welcoming smile that is only recognizable as such if you remember one of those visuals about centaur facial expressions

  53. verengt is much less intimidating to me now that i’ve seen them speak. they seem so nice 🙂

    1. oh what ew. emojified my smiley. :^) nose for safety

  54. hopefully verengt and their clan will be more open minded than the other centaurs talita has met in the past when they find out she’s clanless. (even though she likely won’t be sticking around for much longer) or maybe they’re already aware and accepting of it if mel bothered to tell them ahead of time?

  55. Given how centaur speech works, I wonder if Verengt’s voice sounds different because of her injury; it looks like one of her sinuses would be missing or at least obstructed.

    1. Light_In_The_Fog

From the scar it kinda looks like their sinus on that side is just straight up exposed? I think Jay said that the character concept that ig turned into Verengt would have a weaker voice cause they have much less breath support. I think that character concept was named ‘Broken Crown’ or smth so u might be able to find that somewhere? (tbh it might have just been the page where Verengt was introduced lmao idr)
Also reminder that they/them is still the default pronoun for nonhumans, Talita uses she/her because she has a human gender identity rather than a centaur one.

      1. You’re right about pronouns, I realized right after I posted ;-; I’m so used to Talita and her human-centric gender identity

  56. Thank goodness they’re being nice and speaking to her in a language she understands! We just assume the worst when it comes to poor Talita, glad to see we were wrong about this (so far). Now wishfull thinking has me wondering if they’ll hear her out and be like ‘Damn that fucking sucks, you should 100% get off this rock’

  57. Weird situation to put anyone into, you are going to manage a new team, and you haven’t even been told their names in advance of meeting them?
Just me speculating, but if Verengt has been living with that injury for a long time, and especially around sophonts for whom such a headshot would have taken out much of the brain, she is probably used to some shocked initial reactions. It might be a surprise to them that Talita would have reacted the same way to an unscarred centaur.

    1. I know for people with highly visible disfigurements like this it can get really exhausting seeing every new person that sees you freak out and stare at you. Verengt’s probably had to deal with that a lot. Which, actually, is something they and Talita kind of have in common. Maybe in another life they could have commiserated over being visibly Different.

  58. I like the matriarch’s gentle smile. But I don’t think it’ll help Talita!

  59. If I remember correctly… Trunk curled up and lidded eyes are Centaur smiles. I thinkg Verengt is genuinely trying to be kind here, not knowing about Talita’s condition.

    1. with our first perspective of the matriarch’s expression being from their injured side, i wonder if they are used to having to compensate with trunk smiling and other ways of expressing their emotions. it is a deliberate choice to frame them from that side and obscure their other eye multiple times on this page.

    2. I was gonna say, one of the body-language clashes that Talita has with homeplanet centaurs is that the half-lidded “bored/sleepy” look we see here is “politely neutral” for centaurs, while the wide eyes that Talita cultivates to appeal to humans read as “panic.”

…Although in this case that last one happens to be perfectly accurate.

  60. at least Verengt is being cordial, this probably looks absolutely bizarre from her perspective what with Mel dumping them onto someone that is CLEARLY an inch away from a panic attack. Also that smile she gave was cute!

  61. Land of the Silver Birch

With part of Verengt’s head being gone, does that mean that centaurs could survive without their entire head(if they were kept fed ofc)? I assume it has something to do with the seperate brain thing for centaurs, right?

    1. No brain in the head, just vocal lungs I think? If I’m remembering correctly anyways

      1. There’s a simple diagram all the way back on page 23 (when Ohwitiil was yelling about Talita bringing scrap into the work area) that shows the centaur brain is mostly in the torso. There is a portion that extends up into the head, however; I don’t know if centaurs can survive having that part destroyed. My guess is that it handles a lot of the processing of visual and olfactory input (I forget if centaur ears are in their head or torso, but if in the head probably auditory as well), so they could probably survive without it, but brains are weird. I could also potentially see that being important in controlling breathing (as that olfactory input can tell you if it’s safe to keep breathing the air or better to hold your breath), in which case loss of it could be a serious immediate-survival problem.

        1. Light_In_The_Fog

Just now thinking about how fruit flies are similar, but flipped. Fruit flies have their sensory processing in their head, but their motor functions are in their ventral nerve cord (invertibrate version of a spine) and their more complex (for a fly) logic is in their head, which is kinda the opposite of how centaurs are (i mean im guessing not the motor functions part but the other stuff)

        2. > I forget if centaur ears are in their head

          Way up there.

    2. Jay has answered this one before. While the brain isn’t there breathing and digestion runs through the head as well as a lot the sensory stuff of course. The tech doesn’t currently exist to keep a headless centaur alive, it’s too large a trauma, though partial head loss clearly is survivable.

    3. Jay has mentioned that in most cases the shock of decapitation will kill the centaur, possibly because they don’t really want to deal with a lot of Johnny Got His Gun cases.

  62. I’m wondering what the standards are for personal space among Centaurs (I know it might vary from clan to clan just like with different cultures on Earth), because Verengt gets VERY close to Talita when they introduce themselves.

    1. I had to look up the centaur expressions again to try and parse out this page and having done so, I think perhaps Verengt was expecting a nose-bump greeting? Or was at least offering one out. At least so far they’ve been very polite, but something is sure to go wrong eventually…

      1. Where did you find the centaur facial expressions?

        1. https://www.tumblr.com/jayrockin/674032871372111872/talita-is-a-weird-fringe-case-with-very-human?source=share

There’s more than one post on the subject, but this one’s helpful for Verengt’s expressions

      2. jade stormcloud

        Ah! Perhaps

    2. Someone else pointed out that she was probably trying for a trunk bump, shifts back when she gets denied.

  63. Man imagine this from the clan’s perspective you go to your new job and you meet your manager but they’re looking at you like you’re gonna eat their skin.

    1. also they’re jacked as hell and dressed in weird clothes

  64. Not to be rude, but do I spot a few baby bumps under the matriarchs clothes? 😉
Way to throw everything Talita is not at her all at once

    1. Yeah, this has been speculated since the two-page spread introducing them. Looks more and more like that’s the case.

  65. I love you Verengt. Verengt I love you.

I love with how we’re already seeing the differences in Talita body language vs centaur body lnaguage in a single page. Like to us the second panel makes Verengt look like they’re smiling, but taking into account centaur body language (and reading to transcript just to make sure lol) they’re likely expressing some sort of mild alarm that they might’ve scared Talita. And the last panel is an actual friendly centaur smile but to us they look bored or slightly annoyed.

  66. The spacers have piercings!
    .
I always adore your designs of the cultural styles of different sophonts 🙂

  67. Verengt: “This other centaur is probably scared/shocked by my scarring and might be shy of meeting new people. I will be friendly and personable to ease their worries.”
Talita: “AHHHH. All my insecurities about feeling out of place have been given flesh and put in my charge! Which I am also insecure about!”

I’m late to the party but dang it, Mel. Part of YOUR JOB was smoothing this over.

    1. With how bad Mel is with employee communication and retaining long term workers, I don’t think they appreciate how much of their ‘sucess’ is probably due to the long term workers competence and stability carrying operations, along with temps keeping quite about how unhappy they are. Management being angry probably is a sign their feeling the effects but don’t want to acknowledge the real problem.

  68. I really do wonder what’s gonna happen with them when Talita inevitably “Flees Off to The Sky”, or whatever..
Mel will probably have a tough time trying to figure out who’s gonna be their boss after she leaves… But having to deal with that very stressful situation is honestly quite a mild consequence for the really bad thing they did

    1. Mel will probably hire another temp worker to fill Talitas position who will either make or break her former work unit given how the human temps they hired as replacements for Calcery were 90% various degrees of inexperienrd/incompetent with 1 maybe 2 older competent workers. That or try to convince Tod and Killian their not already too overworked to step in.

  69. Ooh. Pay attention to the transcript – it specifically goes into detail about Verengt’s facial expressions.

  70. man, as much as this situation sucks so bad for talita, im really excited to meet the new centaurs. i wanna know more about centaur culture and life! i wish i could research it for realsies…. (ive already pawed through the supplementary info jay has shared many a time im just greedy and nosy and want more lol)

  71. I’m glad Verengt has tact. She seems well suited to her position so far.

  72. i feel like a lot of people were underselling the new temp centaurs a bit here. like yes talita has plenty of reason to be nervous, AND at least right off the bat i find it hard to believe that they would be assholes to her? it really isn’t too much of a shock they’re polite imo. the matriarch especially has probably dealt with a lot of diplomatic stuff so they’re more used to it

    1. Yes. It’s like the whole spacesuit question. These people are professional space travelers. They may or may not know Talita’s specific situation or how that will have affected her mannerisms, but they do know how to approach strangers in a multicultural situation. And they’ve been through space already. They have their own spacesuits (they have to for safety) and they know how to talk to people.

    2. I was really, really hoping for something nuanced and complex, instead of the melodrama we’re used to in mainstream media… and I think we got it!

  73. Verengt seems nice!!! So far they seem very polite

  74. they seem nice. i hope they stay nice

  75. I’ve been a silent lurker for quite a while, but these recent pages made me want to get out of my comfort zone and leave a comment (growing alongside Talita eh? :> ). I have to say I absolutely adore just how much thought went into the expressions of all the different sophonts. On the second panel Verengt’s expression looks so much like a human smile, but I know tightened lips is a sign of discomfort for centaurs. Meanwhile, I know they’re actually smiling on the last panel, but with the half-lidded eyes, it looks like as if they were smug about it. Really puts into perspective just how confusing and hard to follow this must be for Talita too.

I’m anxiously awaiting where all of this will go horribly wrong – I remember that comment about seeing what a crying centaur looks like in this chapter :”D Verengt seems friendly and polite, but Talita is (understandably) very freaked out, so there’s loots of rooms for misunderstandings to happen. And we don’t know yet what the others are like! The anxiety is palpable.

  76. Glad that Verengt is making such an effort! I was worried the homeworld centaurs would be hostile Talita for being a clanless weirdo. Makes me feel a bit bad that shes probably going to ditch them immediately, but someones got to live up to the title.

    1. Light_In_The_Fog

I can’t imagine Mel considered that Talita has a different set of facial expressions to most centaurs, but I wonder if they told them that Talita hasn’t really had prolonged interaction with other centaurs and if Gwailer Clan is expecting her to, in some part, act more like a human than a centaur. (Tho i wouldn’t be surprised if that wasn’t a piece of info that seemed relevant to Mel in the moment cause “im sure those sort of personal details can help Talita form a relationship with these new temps!”)

  77. wait aint no way verengt is gonna be in an exosuit with the LARVA are they???

    1. gonna be” (while we watch), unlikely, as they’re the matriarch and not a worker of the clan.

Whether they have been and will be once the plot has proceeded to the RttS stage is a different question. Separating the larvae from the matriarch is unusual at least, and the Dirtball habitat doesn’t seem to have an airlock the planet ferries can dock to (obviating the need for a suit to move between them and the habitat), soooo …

    2. Nah, they’re probably good at admin and interpersonal stuff if they’re a matriarch, so likely going to be working in the office space. No need for a suit there.

Talita will more likely be working with the workers of the clan.

    3. This is the second time I’ve seen someone worry about the Matriarch / imply that the Matriarch is going to be working alongside the workers- I’m at least fairly positive the role of the Matriarch would be like upper management of her workers, not going out in an exosuit, and certainly wouldn’t be expected to take the larva out there too- I somewhat doubt they’d let a heavily pregnant human out there, or one with an infant for closer comparison, so even if the Matriarch was to be working out there too, they’d likely be on maternity leave for the moment right now, if indeed they have a set of larva presently.

  78. Oh no, they’re nice. That means it’s going to be all the more tragic when it goes south. When, not if.
I vaguely recall there was some stigma among the Centaur about clanless ones being either dangerous criminals or mentally unstable. Unfortunately, Talita isn’t doing much to disabuse them of the notion, with the wide-eyed stare, obvious discomfort, weird (to them) mannerisms, and skulking about in the shadows trying to not be noticed.

I worry what Mel may have told them about her, or more precisely what they DIDN’T tell them about her.

    1. i want to hope that being spacer centaurs the gwailer are more open-minded compared to homeplanet centaurs given that theyve had more interspecies contact

it probably wont be too long for them to figure out talitas humanisms and then be able to apply their understanding of human expression to her

      1. Ideally, Mel would have been upfront in telling them a bit about their new boss, especially with the tour they seemed to be on and the sheer amount of time with them that would entail. But I rather expect the extent of the introductions would have been along the lines of “Her name is Talita, she’s a Centaur like you :D”. It would be on-brand, given prior engagements.

  79. Is Verengt trying to smile with their mouth to appear more human-friendly or is that a centaur expression I’m misreading?

    1. No, but they are trunk smiling to be polite.

    2. The transcript says “tightening their lips”, which I assume to be reducing their trunk-smile– perhaps recognizing that it may have been overwhelming somehow. Similar to the human expression of pursed lips, or a closed mouth drawn wide without smiling or frowning: 🫤

      1. many earth animals tighten their lips as a stress/nervousness/discomfort/tension signal (a LOT of pictures of animals “smiling” are tension grimaces). humans smiling as a friendliness signal is so weird that even our closely related ape friends don’t do it! (though sometimes they “smile” as a submission signal, which is one of the hypothesized origins for the human smile)

    3. The way she (a matriarch would be she, right?) turns her head sideways to make sure talita sees it sort of implies the former.
Like shes remembering “oh right, the human mouth thing” sort of like when looking at a cat you’d be like “oh right, dont stare into their eyes, they dont like that”.

      1. Despite us using “male” and “female” to understand their sex, most would use they/them, especially if they weren’t brought up in a human culture like Talita.

        1. If I remember right that’s a Jovian speech term that was brought into use due to avians sexes and genders not mapping well to humans and bug ferrets having None Gender, so neutral pronouns just became an Alien Thing. I’m not sure whether centaurs would care or not about what aliens choose to gender them as. I wonder if centaur languages have pronouns based on sex or clan roles? (or at least the native tongue of this clan)

        2. In Jovian English, non-Human sophonts are ALL “they/them” by default, and one isn’t supposed to gender aliens. Avians had to have a special callout about this because their society is so heavily Gender.

  80. I’m not sure why people have been assuming the new centaur temps would be mean to Talita, especially like, on-sight? She’s weird for a centaur, sure, but there’s no way Verengt and their clan aren’t already acclimated to some amount of weirdness – particularly alien-related weirdness – just from being willing to and capable of living off-planet and everything that entails. You have to learn a new language (or maybe more), eat very different foods, live in very different conditions, interact with a wide variety of different people from completely different species with entirely different body languages…

All that to say, I doubt Talita’s weirdness is the oddest thing they’ve ever encountered, lol.

    1. I’d guess people are making these assumptions based on the bits of home world culture we have regarding clanless individuals being treated with hostility or mistrust, and applying a blanket behavior over the entire species.

      1. The fact that Mel has a bad track record of hiring temps like Adam and Dominic also was worrying because they obviously don’t look at experience/character too closely before onboarding soneone. Glad the Matriach is so far a reasonable authority figure but with Mel as the hiring manager temp quality is unpredictable at best.

    2. They’re gonna shove Talita in a locker and steal her lunch money

    3. OhGollieItsOllie

I didn’t think they’d be MEAN, but even humans are mean to other humans who may not emote in the way that seems “proper,” such as people who are neurodivergent. Heck, people from Europe often mention that people in the US are always performatively SMILING all the time and it’s kind of unnerving.

I don’t remember exactly, but Talita’s face reads as kind of scared and slightly aggressive, right? Imagine a human’s face being like that for seemingly no reason. Lots of people would find it very offputting!

  81. Love the lil centaur-planet turtle analog? accessory. I wonder if it’ll hold any significance later on

    1. Ik it’s so cute! I wonder what the animal it’s based on looks like?

  82. oh man verengt is so happy to meet her 😭

  83. ok so far so good… i wonder what they’ll think when they all find out about talita’s species dysmorphia… AND that she was not at all made aware of the new temps (them) being centaurs until like today

also i was JUST wondering recently about how centaurs point when they have such symmetrical hands. nice that the newest page cleared this up 🙂

    1. also jay dang you literally reused the same backstory you did for the OG broken-crown centaur XD dont think we wouldn’t notice…

      1. That was always Verengt 🙂

        1. …no the original art they made was of the concept was of a VERY VERY different centaur with the injury (https://www.tumblr.com/jayrockin/655550323873742848/matriarch-with-a-broken-crown-i-get-asked-a-lot)

      2. More like taking what was just a concept for a character/a description of A Thing That Can Happen and turning it into a full character imo.

    2. Don’t know if they will get aquintanted long enough to touch on topics like species dsymorphia but given Mels parting words they probably already realize she didn’t know about them in advance

  84. and the whole world breathed a half-sigh of relief. this could still go downhill, but at least the temps are trying to be polite. body language and other cultural differences could still fuck things up, though…

  85. Verengt is so lovely thus far

  86. feel like many people forget, its just as awkward for them as it is for talita. veregnt is centaur trunk-smiling here, trying their best to defuse the situation, let’s see how this goes overall! hopefully, relatively well.

    1. also talita lowkey intimidating; to the new centaurs, she’s built like prime arnold and has a resting scary face, and has actively avoided them by just lurking in the shadows like batman. i can’t blame them for being a little wary

      1. oh that’s hilarious, i hadn’t even thought of how ominous she seems to them

        1. like can you IMAGINE. you’re living in a world where dogs and cats are the primary species, humans are extremely rare and often unaccomdated. despite this you’ve taken on the challenge and struck out with your small family to try and make a living amongst the animal-dominated land of space. it’s tough work, since nothing’s really meant for you- squeezing through catflaps, using controls designed for paws and corridors meant for four legs not two, having to mimic a tail wagging or ears flattening, but you manage, just about. then a new job offer, and hey! this place already has an established human working there! you wonder if maybe this is a good new opportuinity, a place with some accomadations and resources, and someone who could relate to your struggles. you get there, and are talking to your dog boss on day one, when you feel someone watching you. you look up and see in the distance an onimous human figure. they’re fucking tall and broad as hell. you can’t quite see their face but the expression seems aggressive and angry. they vanish before you even get a chance to call out. slightly shaken, you go back to your conversation with the dog, who apparently didn’t notice. a few days pass, and you’re on a tour of the facility when suddenly the dog runs off, and goes “btw this is your new coworker!” as it leaves. you look round. this guy is standing there looking at you like you just murdered someone he loved. holy shit. that’s your boss.

        2. @HAL9000 thats so fucking funny. save them

      2. Maybe give Arnold decorative cat ears as the equivalent of Talita dressing like a human.

        1. Bearnold.

          … I’ll see myself out.

  87. Looks good so far, I feel like the conversation may take a turn if they ask about her clan however..

  88. Okay phew they weren’t immediately rude okay this might not be As much of a train wreck as it could have been….. maybe Mel did explain Talita’s situation to them….
My dumb human brain can’t help but interpret Verengt’s face in panel 2 as a little smile with the little curl at the corner of their lips, even though it is probably not that and they are are maybe more suprised or neutral…
They seem cool though…. excited to meet them more…. hope they are nice to Talita…

    1. Is Verengt pronounced “V-air-en-gh-t”? Or something else…

      1. i imagine that the ‘-ngt’ part of their name is strong in pronunciation (i dont know the actual term for that) — though im not sure if that’s correct. we can speculate till Jay gives us a canon interpretation for pronunciation

        1. Maybe the “gt” is something Centaurs are better at? Like, they click their teeth together while doing it or clench their vocal ridges together super tight or something…

      2. For what it’s worth, “verengtis a German word (meaning “narrowed”, as in, a traffic lane or clogged pipework or arteries), so, unless/until Jay overrules that … 😉

        1. We have Centaur words and names that include an “ng” sound, as in “sing, fling, ding, HNNNGGGG.” The vowel values are anyone’s guess, but I’m saying “vair-ENGt” or “vay-RENGt.”

    2. my brain is also telling me to interpret Verengt’s face that way, but i Know they’re more surprised by Talita’s reaction (and maybe cautious as well? since, AFAIK, showing teeth = discomfort and aggression to most centaurs)

      1. The transcript clarifies that Verengt is actually backing away and toning down their (centaur-style) smile (the raised trunk), assuming that they did prompt Talita to react negatively-ish somehow, so “cautious” is probably quite right.

    3. Wait what if Mel explained Talita’s deal to the centaurs but not very well and they interpreted it as “ah, you are of this Human clan” or something

      1. You know, that’s what Tadder and Relaghuul thought about Doug: “I had no idea the Starchasers married Human caregivers into their clans. Fascinating.”

        1. Yeahhh I was thinking about that comic yeaj I didn’t know those centaurs’ names though that’s cool

  89. edenmachine5457

.OH THANK GOD THEY’RE FRIENDLY AND POLITE. THANK GOD THEY’RE CALM ABOUT THIS. HOOOUUHHH THAT’S A RELIEF. my favorite part is that verengt actually freaking cares about how talita feels before they’ve even properly met- they are concerned about if they accidentally approached too quickly. very rapidly becoming one of my favorite characters and i REALLY hope they stay nice and awesome and stuff

    1. incredible that in 3 panels they’ve shown more regard for talita’s feelings than mel has lmfao

  90. Oh good, very good, polite temps. So far (pls stay polite). You know the idea of ‘how do they point fingers across sophonts’ came to mind recently and now I know, Centaurs point with the two middle fingers. Or at least Verengt does. I’m wonderin how long we’ll get to stay *here*, meeting with the New Centaurs, or if the pages will skip ahead again soon… Oh I want to meet all the temps so BAD.

  91. the whiplash from getting used to Talita’s humanized facial expressions to Verengt’s usual centaur facial expressions is really interesting! i think it’ll be fun for us readers to learn them over time — though i can (albeit very roughly) tell what they already are

  92. Ohhh that first panel made me realize, it’s probably a novel experience for Talita, being at a standing eye level with the person they’re talking to! I’m sure it doesn’t help with the weirdness on her end though

    1. SHE’S talking to, Jesus Christ. I’m as bad as the temps ><

      1. Sucks that you can’t edit posts on this comments UI, haha.

  93. …Well they seem friendly!^^

(and just remembered that the raised trunk is meant to be a smile too 🙂 )

  94. Throwaway Potted Plant

They’re being polite so far-! Fingers crossed :,)
